I’m here because of club random. This video has less than 2000 views. Just shows how much is out there still to be discovered. This is a great interview.

I had no idea who Bob Costas was (always hated sports) until Random. He transfixed me with his intelligence, sense of humour, and all-round decency - enough to make me actually enjoy the subject they were focused on: sports! And now here is his younger self being equally impressive. What an interviewer!

@@michaelryan9833 I quit watching tv when I was in my teens, travelled and worked around the world, and did not follow any American pop culture until I broke my arm about 5 years ago and then discovered youtube and Netflix. I also do not own a smartphone! A Luddite with books and nature and conversations is how I chose to evolve. And I love Bill Maher (didn't know who he was either, until fairly recently)!

As a night owl 🦉, l used to watch this show all the time. Costas was - and still is - a great interviewer. And, as we saw on a recent episode of Mr. Maher’s Club Random, a great interviewee. Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!

I don't think Costas wants to do it. He likes doing his sports show on HBO once every two or three months. I guess you could say he's semi-retired.

I remember Maher saying on a talk show "I'm 34 so I'm getting older." After watching this I understand why he was already worrying about age: he hadn't made it yet in show business.

Ahhh the days when you actually had to write a letter, put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mailbox if you wanted to tell someone how offended you were. (Also he's disproving the popular notion that getting easily offended is somehow a new thing).

Maher is def in the club. Love him as a pundit, but not a great comedian
@collinsmcrae
@collinsmcrae Жыл бұрын
He was a great comedian, whether or not you personally like his act. The Tonight Show was the top of the mountain back then, and he was invited back numerous times. How do you think he even got his shows? He did about as well in standup as you can possibly do in his era, which resulted in two smash hit talk shows of his own. He's not so sharp at standup now, because it's more of a side hussle for him at this point. He has his specific audience that he peforms for, when he does perform, and his material doesn't get pressure cooked like someone who's doing it full time in many markets.
@MrPete-pe6uk
@MrPete-pe6uk Жыл бұрын
@@collinsmcrae sorry, but never a great standup. few who guest hosted for johnny were...with Garry Shandling being a notable exception. Maher's comedy was safe/tame, perfect for tonight show audiences. Again, his two shows are/were great...but more for his punditry than his wit. A B-minus standup at best...despite his success.
@collinsmcrae
@collinsmcrae Жыл бұрын
@@MrPete-pe6uk It's fair to have that opinion, other than that you are just objectively wrong about his standup being clean and safe. Everyone had to cleanup for network television. His act did certainly push boundaries at the time, and he did plenty of lude material. He was a very successful standup though and those were so rare and few in number, that anyone who reached that level is an elite comic imo. Just not your personal cup of tea. Not really mine either. I completely agree about Garry Shandling though. One of the goats for me.
@Lindsyll
@Lindsyll Жыл бұрын
he's terribly unfunny at stand up. but a lot of americans think a lot of poor comedians are funny. and when he made that show his brand, he was able to do the road off that alone. so it didn't matter that he wasn't funny. they just came to see him because he was the star of a popular show.
