true, lots of Americans think socialism is equal to communism. When they think about socialism they think about Mao Zedong, Lenin, North Korea, ...which is not true at all. You can have a liberal, democratic society with socialism. It's a matter of moderation and common sense.
@machia-mw1lm9 жыл бұрын
Conservatism and Capitalism is common sense too .
@jmitterii29 жыл бұрын
+machia0705 Absolute conservatism and absolute capitalism isn't though. Mixed market social-capital system that began after the disaster of near unfettered capitalism of the 1800's and early 1900's was replaced in the US by mixed market system. Other countries began mixed market practices at various times. Common sense is to utilize what works, and what works isn't a black and white ideology. But a mix of things based on logical premises. The US is a social country, and has ever gone more social. First by the vote, of statesmen, then increasing so by the vote of all men regardless of property ownership, then universal suffrage including women, public schools, public universities, public streets and road ways, ports, libraries, restrooms, parks, etc. Then right to labor to unionize which wasn't realized until 1935 until then many massacres took place between the so called lawmen of the oligarch and workers known mostly as the coal wars from 1875 to 1935. Then social security with the very name of social in the policy in the 40's. To medicare in the 60's. Then medicaid in the 70's. And ever growing public transit systems from subways, buses, street cars, etc. some privately owned some publicly owned. Utilities, some privately owned always publicly regulated, some still publicly owned. Mixed market structure is what has given most developed countries the defining prosperity to be called developed.

@CherokeeApacheIrish9 жыл бұрын
+jmitterii2 You conveniently left out the "Great Depression" of the 1920's -1940's and all the other economic downturns afterwards. Less I forget the US Government with your mixed market/government economic social system has produced what is it now, like almost 19 TRILLION in national debt? Yep! and will keep getting larger and larger and the currency will keep getting further and further inflated. Only reason the US mixed market social system hasn't fully crashed all the way is the US dollar is still the world's most traded currency and we trick/bully other nations in to buying our Government debt. That is coming to a rude close pretty quick since the establishment of the BRICS system of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and the dozens of other nations joining the BRICS. The only problem is and will always be the only problem of "Political Corruption".

+Krista he isn't speaking to even 1% of Americans due to lack of access of the majority of people in this country. If you believe everyone here has HBO, cable, or even a tv, you're sadly mistaken. 1.8 million viewers per week for him doesn't even win his time slot, lead by Gold Rush with 2.6 million. Bill Maher is just interesting, no matter who he is with. He picked up where George Carlin and Andy Rooney left off; very intelligent, very passionate, and very funny. He is a forward-thinker. This was a very candid interview, although I don't think Mr George S. has great interviewing skills at this point (talks too fast, for one thing). Although he did allow Bill Maher to give complete answers...and that's a good thing.

Mäher's life was affected by growing up in the household of a newsman. This does influence the children; my husband had a long career in radio, newspapers, and television and I can see the influence of this profession on the mentality of our children. They work in other professions but their interest in knowing about the world stems at least partly from the attitude towards truth that prevailed in our household.
