No he wasn't the king of speak. He was the king of playing ball and keeping close to the center of American politics. Compared to most modern podcasters, Larry King barely spent any time talking to people. Most of his talks with people were filler. I love Larry King, but he certainly was not some pillar of American discourse. He was on par for what he did, but he towed the political line and was not impressive in any way that stands out. Almost anyone could have done what he did at the same level, given the opportunity.

Not surprised Carlin said that too, but i'll bet my bottom dollar he said it with empathy in context - for ex 'it's a big club and you ain't in it' (thru no fault of your own). Maher, otoh, just considers everyone but himself an idiot. They couldn't be more different; mostly in that Maher _is_ in the club. butch oblick, hey if you just discovered Carlin WTG! I don't know if you're familiar with his work but that isn't true at all. He knows that the status quo is awful. He says that on his show all the time. He just also knows that Trump isn't the answer and will only make things worse (which has been proven to be correct till now).
@jacknapier5188
@jacknapier5188 4 жыл бұрын
@@annnee6818 I watch the show, and it's apparent that Bill has been stuck in the LA Liberal bubble, hobnobbing with the elite for so long that he's lost perspective on the values the democrats used to stand for. On so many issues, truly, both parties are a mirror image of themselves. The people who voted for Trump aren't all racist neanderthals: They just know they've been promised a lot for their support support since the 90s and nothing has changed. Their wages are stagnant, they can't afford a home and don't get access to adequate medical services. Bill doesn't want to blame the democrats for their short comings in embracing neoliberalism and corporatism at the expense of the working and middle classes. If an establishment hack gets the nomination (as it seems he's championing centrists who still take corporate pack money) Trump will win again despite how inept and corrupt his administration is.

Paul Judkins I'm still conservative in many ways, similar to Mahr. But Republican politicians have lost their minds (cue any clip of any Republican Rep or senator from the last 3 years for examples), and, YES, much of the left, the progressive and PC sects, are looney as well, but liberal? Liberal means seeking truth and applying what truth we know. Liberal means fixing things at the input to get a better output. Learning the truth about religion led me to liberalism. You are right about change. Trump brought change. It's changed from some bad, some good to some good, some nightmare. We need improvements. Tech improves all the time. Many of Tech's processes can be applied to politics, or at least to policy.

Bill, as a huge fan and weekly watcher, I switched. I was a registered Republican when I turned 18. I called myself a Libertarian through college. I now am a registered Democrat, am planning to volunteer and/or work for whoever the eventual nominee is, and will do the same for the Buttigieg campaign in the primary if he wins Iowa or gains more momentum. I even would say that I have found a sense of purpose in wanting to pursue a career in public service to help push the country towards a more "progressive" (the term here meaning making progress on sensibly liberal policy, not far leftist) future. Now I obviously can't and won't attribute ALL of that to you and your show, but you absolutely played a role. I don't agree with you on everything, but your no nonsense, evidence based, and logic based approach to discussing issues helped open my eyes to parts of my political beliefs that didn't align with my valued but which I believed anyway out of habit. My parents, both former registered Republicans who voted for every Republican candidate until Trump, have committed to voting for any Democratic candidate next year, and have even pushed me to help campaign for Buttigieg, a candidate I Introduced them to through your show. Change is hard, and unfortunately increasingly uncommon these days, but it doesn't "never" happen. It might happen exceedingly rarely for those who's beliefs have been entrenched for decades, but always, at all times, there is someone watching who may be in a formative stage of their life or who may not have been exposed to your way of thinking. With a show as large as yours, I'd argue it is a statistical certainty. I may not change your mind about whether or not it is worth engaging in the long and slow process of deprogramming millions of people, but you and your show absolutely have caused minds to change, even if they didn't write you letters about it.

@mgtow is monk There is principle and then there is practice. Principle: I believe that taxation is theft and that government isn't good at anything, but killing and locking people up. Practice: I am undecided on whether or not that principle should be implemented purely into practice because of practicality and a universal set of standards. IE: laws, regulations, safety nets, roads, law enforcement, etc. I understand that in capitalism there will be poor people regardless of effort, skill, and talent. There are only so many good paying jobs and the rest will be mediocre, to bad. This leaves me undecided on recirculating money to the bottom to be brought back to the top, but I am more in support of a UBI, than not.

@alexs.1242 4 жыл бұрын
There's a widely misunderstood fact, though. News anchors - no matter who they are - are glorified bingo callers, with nice hair and a TV-friendly voice. And that's all. The real power lies in the hands of the producers, who you never see: They're the ones who decide whether you lead with the weather, or something serious. Jennings, and others of that stature, often double as a managing editor, or executive news editor, and some of them do exert a measure of executive control. They all have bosses, though, even Jennings. And if Jennings' boss wants to lead with the Kardashians, Jennings is going to lead with the Kardashians - either that or move on, and go back to proper journalism. I always thought that was the real reason Scott Pelley went from anchoring the CBS Evening News back to doing 60 Minutes fulltime. He got tired of being a mannequin on good pay.
@rikihorton5979
@rikihorton5979 4 жыл бұрын
Alex S. True. But Jennings, who sadly died rather suddenly about fifteen years ago, never struck me as the type who would allow himself to be used that way. He seemed to know and care about what was important news. Network news was never really all that smart, but now it literally leads with the weather and gives mostly just the headlines before moving on to fluff. Much like Maher said.

I tried my best to try understanding the point of view of Trump supporters. They ended up confirming that they are either racist, bitter people, or they are awestruck by Trump's personality (the cultists), and a few of them are rich, greedy, selfish people who support him because he ran on a Republican platform that works to make the rich even richer. To conclude, each one of Trump supporters has serious problems when it comes to their moral compass, when they either blatantly support Trump's racism, sexism, bullying, corruption or play mental gymnastics to somehow try to justify it or else plainly deny it. To be honest, I haven't met even a single Trump supporter who is overall a good person.
