I got this Tocco plastic flute at the NFA convention (which was held in Las Vegas this year). Guo Musical Instruments had a booth on the exhibit floor at the convention. In any event, Guo is very easy to track down on the web and these instruments are going to become more popular, for sure. (By the way, my main axe is a Haynes.)

This just popped up in my feed after God knows how long! Are Tocco flutes still available? I never ever saw them over this side of the Pond. Still playing my Nuvo placky flute, and it's still half the weight of any of my metal ones 😁😉 Very handy for playing outside in the park!

Musically, Bill McBirnie seems to have attended the same school as Hubert Laws and Moe Koffman - which is marvelous. ( smile! ) If I recall correctly, one of Laws' Classical teachers has been Mr.Barone (sp), also one of Bill's tutors. Never heard of Bill McBirnie; cat can play.I like his approach to improvisation which I am still learning to do.

Nice playing, what is the advantage of using this plastic flute instead of my silver Haynes flute ? You seem very comfortable and fluid using it, do you find it easier to play? The sound seems to be very similar to a metal flute while wooden flutes sound different which is the reason people use them. Do they make a bass flute version ?

I like it, but I rely on my Haynes instruments for most of my playing and recording situations. Guo does make a bass flute version, and I think it is probably very good quality, and undoubtedly worth the price!

I just like the instrument. It does not have the volume of a silver flute...but it has a pleasing woody quality...and I quite enjoy playing it!... :-)

The Tocco is less expensive and it is actually a good instrument. But they are "plastic" which means that they are not necessarily as loud as a metal instrument. I think the same would be true of the higher end grenadine instrument. It is probably best to try one and see what you think, Wanadoo! :-)

I have bought a Guo New Voice closed hole and am a complete novice. I have a fingering chart. The keys at the back where your left thumb goes look different to a normal flute. I know one is used for a B and the other for a Bb but what do I press for other notes? Do I press them down together because it doesn't seem to make a difference which one I press? Nobody seems to have brought this issue up and the fingering chart I have doesn't distinguish which note I press. TIA. You're a great player BTW. Reply
