Correction: at 1:31 I say "C and C flat" and I mean C and C sharp.
I got one of these Nuvo flutes and I played it meanwhile my own Mateki was getting its maintenance for 2 weeks! I was quite suspicious about it at first. I hope I'll be able to compare it to a "normal" student flute of the same price range at some point.
This is a somewhat brief introduction. I'll most likely cover the instrument more in future videos. It is quite interesting really!

I feel this type of comparison is the best! When people play one entire piece on one instrument and then the other I forget what the first sounded like. I really like the way it was done here. The pink flute sounds a bit dull, not crystal clear but not too bad!

I think it is the best solution for playing flute in the marching band. I wish they made a full silver one so it would fit in for the marching band. This is the best thing because marching band is hard enough with having a wet flute that is slippery it gets when it's wet and being in marching band getting repairs for pads and etc becomes costly and expensive. So I highly recommend this for marching band because to break or lose a 500 or 1000 dollar flute vs a 100 dollar flute is way better.

I can hear the pink flute as darker, it seems to lack the upper harmonics of the silver flute. The reviewer as an experienced player can make it sound passable, a student would likely have a more difficult time obtaining a rich, resonant tone on it.

Good switch and back flute comparison, and interesting to hear the benefits of the plastic flute. I too do hear the softer deeper vibrations on the plastic flute, almost like a wood flute, which makes high notes impossible.

There are 3 important points to think about if you're considering buying a flute for a young beginner: 1. The flute should be light so that the child can keep her embouchure steady over the lip plate. Her airstream will then stay in the same place, not moving away because the child can't hold the flute steadily. 2. The price should be low in case the child gives up after a year or two. Obviously the tone, tuning, keys and pads all have to be of a reasonable standard. 3. Beware of maintenance costs. The design should reduce the need for repair and overhaul to a minimum. Head joints are easily damaged on metal flutes; in contrast, you can drop the Nuvo's head joint on a brick floor and it will bounce back undamaged. Nuvo pads are waterproof, they don't tear or rot and last just about forever.

The material a wind-blown instrument is made from can sometimes have remarkably little effect on the tone. When my college received a small portable organ whose F pipe had been cut shorter to make it play a G, and whose adjustment slide wasn't long enough to bring it back to F, I rolled up a postcard and stuck it in the open end. Aside from its tendency to slip out of tune, the pipe sounded fine despite the end being made from card stock. What's really critical for wind-blown instruments is the accuracy of the shape of the resonant cavity. I would expect a plastic instrument whose cavity is shaped properly to sound better than an instrument made of the highest quality metal, but whose resonant cavity is shaped poorly.
@lemonemmi
@lemonemmi 4 жыл бұрын
@@flatfingertuning727 That's true, you can extend a pipe with paper if you have to, and it sounds just fine. Done it many times with my unfortunately sharp whistles. But the material of the head joint (as speaking of flutes) really makes a big difference in tone. I adore wooden flutes, the soft mellowness they have, and you can make a metal flute sound 'wooden' just by switching the head joint and leaving the rest be. Nice videos you have, btw! Simple and very effective! :)
@flatfingertuning727
@flatfingertuning727 4 жыл бұрын
@@lemonemmi I would think , then, that the logical thing to do would be to make a flute which is mostly plastic except for the head portion, and that doing that would offer most of the price advantage of making everything plastic.

I hope you managed to get one. I started with the original jFlute (with no foot joint and a curved mouthpiece), then bought the C foot joint for it, which I think is the same as the original Nuvo student flute. I found the foot joint didn't work well for me, compared to my Trevor James metal flute, but i probably press the keys too hard, which makes it bend the pads away from the holes slightly. I stiffened the low C# key, by glueing in a piece of bent metal, which helps a bit. On the whole, I like it though, It's light and comfortable to play, and I like the fact that it has a different tone than my metal one. I might buy the student flute 2.0 version, just out of curiosity. I recently bought the "donut" head joint, that now comes with the jFlute 2.0 - it fits my original jFlute, so i'm hoping it will fit the student flute 2.0 too. The donut works better than the original curved head joint and makes it even more comfortable. The jFlute 2.0 is cheaper than the student flute, but if you buy the upgrade kit with the foot joint and he straight head joint later, it would cost more... but then you'd have a choice of the donut and the straight head joint.

Hello, Heline: Thank you for the review and especially the playing comparison, switching between the plastic Nuvo flute and your very nice Mateki flute. If you ever update this video, it would be helpful to hear you play the high notes on your flute to compare with the failed high notes on the plastic flute. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the plastic flute sounded in the lower registers, at least. Thanks again.

I bought the 2.0 version for my first flute. I think it was a good purchase. The lightness is helpful when first starting. The tone is not quite the same but with practice still sounds good. Even after I eventually upgrade it will be useful for it's durability. I go camping a lot and I would not want to bring a 700-2000$ flute camping.

Nice review. People shouldn't be put off by the fact it is plastic. I once had a plastic Eb clarinet & it was a beauty (although, like your flute, it got kind of sketchy towards the top of it's range) Played a lot of great music with that instrument & nobody ever knew it was plastic unless I told them. I especially like the way your hair matched the flute in this video. Very cool indeed! Sadly, my hair matches your other flute (silver) but that's life I guess... :)

I have a theory as to why the plastic flute struggles with the very high notes. The plastic is not quite as hard as metal. At those higher notes, the wavelength is shorter and the air pressure is higher on the peaks of the wave. Metal doesn't give and the wave bounces off the metal easily. The slight *give* the plastic has would absorb a little of the energy, dampening the wave's peaks. It's just a theory. I'm thinking about buying one of these though. It would be good for taking along on a hike in the woods. More durable and less worry about damage in rougher settings.

Back when KZbin first started, in 2005, and I had briefly started playing flute again, for fun, and to make a few little home recordings, I used to search for plastic flutes online. I was wondering when they were going to be made, and what they would sound like. So now I know, and thank you. Since my plastic alto recorder feels like plastic but doesn't sound like plastic, I figured a transverse flute might sound pretty good. One problem might be the durability of the key mechanism though. It's funny, because when I first listened to your comparison, I was so surprised it sounded as good as it did, and a little enraptured by the simplicity and beauty of your playing of the Swan Lake theme, I noticed only a little difference between the plastic and your Mateki. Then, on a second listening, it stuck out like a sore thumb. The Mateki sounded so much better. Since I play violin now, and like listening to modern vs. old violins, I read that a person can only hold a few seconds of tone quality in their memory, something like 5 seconds, when comparing instruments, on a first listening anyway, or when the differences are more subtle. When I was college age in the mid-1970s, I went to Vienna to study flute with an idol of mine, and I wanted to enter the Geneva International Music Competition. An older flutist named Paula Robison had won it some years before and it launched her career as a soloist and chamber music player. I saw her on the TV all the time, playing music in "Live from Lincoln Center." Plus, I was scared silly about just the thought of auditioning for an orchestra. I thought winning a major competition would give me confidence, as it did years later for Pahud, who at 22 won the position with the Berlin Phil. The competition for orchestral positions is ridiculous. Although once I played a movement of a sonata flawlessly for an audition before a famous flutist -- it could have gone straight to CD -- I just didn't think that would be possible for me to do with orchestral excerpts, under pressure, competing against dozens, sometimes up to 100 other flute players. So there in Vienna, I quit the flute, embarked on another career which initially sent me to South America, but however exciting, I didn't have the constitution (health) for so much travel. I went back to university in my little town in the US. Anyway, Heline, does your Mateki have an inline G key? It's hard to tell, but it looks like it might have it. My flute has an inline G, and even though my fingers are long, offset G is more natural for me. The whole left hand rests more naturally with an offset G, and I can trill faster, G to A or G to G# with an offset G. (My first student flute has offset and that's how I know.) So that's one reason the pink flute might feel kind of good for you, although it's different in other ways as you pointed out. People with small hands invariably feel more comfortable with offset G. Speaking of high notes, did you know that the flute actually has fingerings that go up to an F above high C? I hit an E once. High C# and D are both in some orchestral and solo literature, and anytime I tested a new flute, I had to make sure I could hit those notes easily. One more thing...although I saw a few students with Hammig wood flutes while in Austria, I never got to try one, they are very expensive now. But many years later, around 2000, I think all three flutists with the London Symphony, and some other orchestras, switched to wooden flutes. It was like an exodus from silver flutes for a while. One reason they liked them is that the increased tube size, even bigger than your plastic flute, made holding the flute easier and more natural. There is a "crutch" you can buy for a silver flute, to make the tube (barrel) stick out more.
@HelineFay
@HelineFay 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your story! Flute competition is crazy indeed. The sound is quite ok (airy though) for plastic flute, but definitely won't replace a proper flute. I have inline G yes. When I started Uni with flute I played a rented Miyazawa with offset G and after comparison I found that inline G was actually feeling better for me. My hands are extremely small (I've had 10-year-old students with longer fingers than I have) but I think because my middle finger is not much longer than than index finger or ring finger, it (inline G) feels more natural for me. I think Nuvo's thick tube with the non-slippery material makes it quite nice though. I've been thinking about trying some thin silicone pad or something with my Mateki to make it less slippery. When I studied at uni I actually did play above the highest C, some newer pieces had written D and E. I've completely forgotten the fingerings though and haven't explored those very high notes for quite a while as I dropped out from the Uni I was playing flute already over 10 years ago. I haven't played much classical music since then. I would really love to try a wooden flute, never gotten a chance but maybe someday I'll be able to buy one.

@@HelineFay There goes my theory about small hands and offset G. LOL. Good to know! When I was young, no Internet of course, and most of us didn't know anything about flutes. We were really stumbling around in the dark, totally clueless, in high school especially. I wanted to know so much though. I wanted to know everything about the flute. My first year in college with access to a great music library, I dove into the wacky and wonderful book, My Complete Story of the Flute: The Instrument, the Performer, the Music by Leonardo De Lorenzo (1951). I just searched for it now as an e copy online, so I'd know the full title, and it's apparently hard to get in any form. It's a wild romp through the history of the flute, and includes some of De Lorenzo's personal views and experiences. It was just fun to read, that's all.

Just because I was intrigued, I got the bright blue version in early 2015 and was quite surprised at how good it actually sounds, although I do have to work a bit harder to produce the sound than on my professional model silver flute. And the highest notes come out on mine, so perhaps yours just needs some kind of adjustment. Once in a while, though, for no apparent reason, it will simply refuse to "speak" but giving it a good shake usually cures that problem. I too found the case a bit big, so I made my own case, from foam and fabric, and it squishes quite nicely into a backpack. I take this flute on trips to locations where I'd be concerned about what might happen to my good flute, i.e. if I'm out hiking in the woods, it won't matter if I drop the plastic flute into the creek by accident. And to top it off, I took it to Israel in 2015 and it was baptized with me in the Jordan River. So yes, you really can get it completely wet.
@HelineFay
@HelineFay 4 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! Amazing story. I really can't wait to test this on outdoor situations. Making a smaller case seems like a great idea though. The original case is BIG and that kind of limits the portability a bit. Yeah I've been thinking about just ordering a few lip plates, I'm quite certain that's the main issue with the highest register. I also want to tune one or two of them with dremel or similar tool to see if I can make it even a bit easier to play.

Excellent review. Your alternating-flute performance showed no discernible difference between the voice of your Nuvo and your metal flute. This is in contrast to other reviews on KZbin. Thank you for confirming that the high register is unplayable above G. Most of us amateurs who play in a band never need to go up to high G any way. The fact it is breathy makes it more suited for light music or jazz which do not expect clean bel canto voicing. In Hong Kong, Nuvo's designated agent offered me good, responsive service in addition to local retail shop techs. The instrument is very stable. Mine hasnt needed adjustment but I suspect it can not be adjusted. Personally I don't have any criticism of its intonation, but the thought of its low price probably subconsciously stir up suspicion. A metal flute of the similar price range is expected to be unstable, leaky, requiring frequent tweaking, and liable to be turned into a nice lamp stand. Its ruggedness is great for the novice. Just leave it out on a flute stand, assembled and you can practice with it whilst watching TV. No need to wipe down after use. Just let it drip dry. Its alternative "donut" head works as good the straight version but I dont recommend this curved head joint unless it is for a small child. It looks silly for an adult. As a septuagenarian starting on the flute, with serious neck degeneration causing weakness of upper limbs, the light weight of the Nuvo flute is a god send. Thank you Heline for your comprehensive review of the NUVO flute. I highly recommend this instrument, the price of which is 1/30 of my saxophone!

I don't play the flute. Not particulary a fan of Jethro Tull. And not particularly a fan of flute playing. However...you are quite charming. And your Finn/Brit English accent...is quite charming as well. You...seem to be a real sweetheart. Play some Baroque Medieval flute, should you take requests. I love the way The Beatles and producer George Martin, placed the 'baroque sound', in a few of The Beatles' tracks. Nice channel. You have a new subscriber. 👍☀️👍

On the plus side, if you're not sure that the flute is for you or if you would use it only occasionally, the price is good. Of course, you could rent a flute too. On the minus side, if you're serious, you will be switching to a professional quality instrument and the transition will set your progress back for a while.

Thanks! Do you think the nuvo flute is a better cehap choice than a cheap metal student flute, if one want the sound from a wooden flute? I played the irish type (simple system) for a while, and love that sound. But I am not thrilled with how hard it is to get the correct pitch with those. An Armstrong metal flute I've got is easier, but don't have that woody sound I love.
@HelineFay
@HelineFay 2 жыл бұрын
If you prefer the soft sound I'd say it's great for that. I'd say cheap metal one will need adjusting probably sooner than later and could be just a hit or miss with the quality. From my experience the Nuvo flutes are consistently good quatlity and requries minimal maintenance.

Ornette Coleman used to play a plastic Saxophone. He was one of the best of all time - I think he did it because of Charlie Parker - at a concert Parker had no saxophone to play and asked if anyone had one - some kid had his plastic student practice model and Charlie used it to play - it sounded great and different, they even cut a record of the gymnasium performance in Canada, this was in the 50s. Perhaps this is why Ornette Coleman played such a thing on some of his records, because it was legendary. Perhaps it was the sound. I'm not sure - I should investigate.

Will someone please explain, what is the attraction to the flute on KZbin? There are tons of flute channels, most of them comparing ungodly expensive flutes to the bottom end stuff from Amazon. I play single-reed instruments and I don't see a lot of channels about clarinets. By the way, I liked the sound of the pink flute better, but what really matters is whether it can be played and the pink flute apparently had some problems in the upper register.

A bit of heresy, but I like the softer sound of the cheap flute. It wouldn't work for every piece of music, and it would probably get muddy in a full symphony, but some musics do benefit from a more "organic" sound. It could just be my prehistoric personality, but I think of flute music as coming from instruments made of bone or wood. Sometimes, the metallic clarity of modern instruments sounds too crisp, and a little harsh or shrill.

I’ve been teaching flute for 34 years and repairing them for 25 years. My honest advice - spend the money on a decent 2nd hand one. Sounds like that Nuovo was already leaking on the F# key. All mechanisms wear, metal ones can be repaired, plastic ones can’t.

I decided in my mid-70s to learn the flute. Mindful of the number of friends who on retirement vowed to do the same but never got beyond spending their retirement lump sum on an instrument I decided to see if I could stay the course and started with a Nuvo flute. It got me started but I switched to a Yamaha after 3 months. I like the Nuvo tone especially in the mid register - warmer - although when I play, it generally sounds more breathy. If you buy one, and I would strongly recommend the Nuvo, be prepared for some aggressively negative responses from potential teachers: easily solved by finding another teacher.

Even as a non flutist, i can hear a distinct difference. your real flute sounds much warmer and airy whereas the Nuvo is almost a bass tone lower.. if that makes any sense.. probably because of the wider diameter as well, but it doesn't sound as nice to me.
