I saw Bill Monroe and his band perform live at the Grand Ol’ Opry several years ago late in his career. I was such a jug head that I stood up and yelled out a request, failing to realize that the show was going out live across the country on WSM and WSM-TV locally. Bill didn’t miss a beat but gave me a well-deserved death stare which I’ll never forget. 🤦🏼

The little smirk on Bill's face at the end of his solo on Bluegrass Breakdown says it all. "I'm the man and don't forget it" How many mandolin pickers from his generation and at his age can pick like that? I can tell you.....NONE.
@douglasgay44973 жыл бұрын
I've alway's heard that his mandolin had a sound like no other. Also read that it was stolen once but was recovered beat to heck. The story goes that fender restored it for him for free and it sounded as good as ever. Think maybe the good lord made that happen. I think it was an f9 fender. Can anyone confirm that.?
@47Banjoman3 жыл бұрын
@@douglasgay4497 Monroe NEVER owned a Fender product of any kind. His mandolin was a 1923 Gibson Lloyd Loar F5 he purchased at a barber shop for $150.00. Easily worth a half a million or more today due to the historical nature. I've had the pleasure of playing a Lloyd Loar 1924 F5. It was like holding the Holy Grail of mandolins. I'm a banjo picker and guitar picker by trade but play "at" the mandolin. The Loar in my hands me be suddenly feel like I could actually play the thing! I've said many times that it damned near played itself. Here's a link to a quick story on his mandolin history. Enjoy: www.angelfire.com/ky2/mybluegrass/BMFMANDO.html

@@47Banjoman you are 100% correct. My mistake, thank's for getting me straight on that. Didn't Ricky Scaggs inherit that from Bill.? If not where did it end up.? I do know one thing, Bill really was brilliant, could listen to him all night. Stay safe, and thank's again.

@@47Banjoman The link you posted was written a long time ago and is full of errors. The mandolin did sell first to Mercer and investors for $1,125,00.00. Mercer defaulted on the note and it ended up with another seller, the philanthropist (who turned out to be a ponzie scheme scammer, who later committed suicide when he was caught by the Feds) who purchased it for that same price and then donated to the CMHF. Skaggs never owned it, but did have Gibson Co. to make a copy from one of his Skaggs signature model F5 into a replica of Monroe's worn F5.

I can never tire of listening to this great man and some of the best musicians that ever graced the stage.!! All you have to do is look up some of the folk's that started out working for Bill. And I've never heard any of them have a bad thing to say about him. He ran a tight ship but a fair one. R.I.P. Bill, look forward to meeting you in heaven some day.!!
