I remember in the 1960s as a teenager watching Bill Moyes at the Moomba Festival in Melbourne, Australia. He took off from the Yarra River on what I thought was a bloody big "kite" towed by a speed boat. I was absolutely astonished when, at a couple of hundred feet altitude, he cut loose the tow rope, turned away from the river and actually flew over the buildings of the city of Melbourne before turning back and landing in the river. What an aviator!!! God Bless you Bill and thanks for helping instill an interest in aviation in a kid from Melbourne. I am now 70, and a former Search and Rescue pilot in California.

Respect M. Bill! I was in the Grand Canyon when you flew. I was 11 years old. I was with my sisters mother & father. You give me the opportunity to realise my dream. Than I start flyin when we get back in France in 1974. From this moment I never stop flying in Hang Glider. Now I'm 58 & I'm still flying in the french ALps. Thank you Bill.

Bill taught me personally to tow behind the tug and always encouraged me to improve. I love to hear these history lessons. I also try to get my dad to share his stories about the first days of hang gliding. What a great movie.

I took lessons at US Moyes, Dave Braddock was my instructor, any relation? That was about 40 years ago, bought my first two gliders there also, a Midi and a Maxi. I remember seeing a youngster, maybe 11 years old soaring, Henry Braddock?

All of the Hang Gliding Fraternity owe a world of debt to Bill for having the Courage and Vision to Pioneer this Amazing Sport in Australia. Moyes have sprung from their humble beginnings to become one of the world leaders in Hang Gliding design and manufacture. It is a Sport like no-other that leaves you on a Natural High after every flight. Well Done Bill & Family for allowing us privileged few to experience the Wonder of Flight....

Was blessed to be able to partake in towing lessons on Indian Lake in Michigan with Bill, Steve, the Braddocks, etc. in ~1980. And to do two balloon drop launches at the 1981 balloon races in Battle Creek MI. Steve's skill was amazing, but then again I witnessed many low altitude high proficiency displays at Warren Dunes State Park, Bridgeman MI. Thank you, Mr. Bill, for sharing your amazing gifts over the years! John 3.27; James 1.17. etc., etc.

In '74, as a 14yo kid, a mates father bought an old second hand rogolo hang glider from Moyes. We all learned to fly it at the Kurnell sand dunes. Fun days. (My mate and I gave it away when the team graduated to "hill 60" down Wollongong way, where we realized that we were there to do all of the hard work but weren't ever allowed to fly)

There are earlier Rogallo wing flights. Click the thumbnail to the left for possibly first flights. These flights were around 1961, foot launched into barely detectable headwinds ( takeoffs faster than I could run, but initial lift from the glider held me up). (I later developed a wing using a single cylinder snowmobile engine for power.) No monetizing here, I already had a good job and this was just a hobby. Btw, I am 81. Looks like Moyes had fun and a few adventures just as I did, anyhow.

Ha! I got a $175 ticket for flying my hang glider off one of the bluffs in the Grand Canyon, back in '79/'80, while on an extended road trip after graduating high school. I tried to contend there were noo postings as to that effect, but I still got the ticket. Never did pay it, I just kept heading East and finding new places to fly. Go tickets for flying in both Yosemite and Yellowstone, as well - unpaid. Sure glad things like that drop off the books eventually. lol

I met Bill Moyes at the Spanish World Air Games in Andalucia. WAG 2001. Amazing bloke! Best memory, was Steve Moyes drinking black beer in Wales. In a subsequent competition, he had to decide which foot to place in a spot landing comp! I merely fly a Pilatus B4 aerobatic sailplane now. Pulling +5 G is good for removing gallstones? Would still love to fly a Moyes topless hg.

It depends. I just picked up a slightly damaged Sea Gull III off Craigslist for 30.00! Removed and rebent the front gusset, and Bob's yer uncle... It floats on 10 mph headwind in my back yard! Check with the guys at Twin Oaks air park, whitewater, Wisconsin. Their real good at instruction too.

@@davegreene1198 I have a 1979 UP Condor which was given to me. I flew avidly for 10 years and I owned a Condor back then. I'm 76 and take that old glider to the Oregon coast every couple years and soar the sand dunes for an hour to make sure I can still do it. These days my main ride is a Long EZ which I built and have flown over 2,000 hours.
