My father took me to see this movie when it came out. I was 11. I still use Lighten Up, Francis whenever anyone takes things way too seriously. I even got to use it on someone named Francis once. Bucket list item checked off.

Fun fact, this films basic training scenes were filmed at Ft Knox, Kentucky . Formerly the home of Armor and Cavalry. I myself went thru basic training in 1991 at Ft Knox. The area where everyone first arrived is where I arrived. The barracks were part of the reception area originally built during WW2. Yes I did run the obstacle course and got my head shaved in the same barber shop. And yes we all became aware after a while where we were, some faster than others. The Do Wah Diddy cadence is a privilege you have to earn. You cannot sing it unless the Drill Sgt says so. When he starts singing it, YOU KNOW that your platoon has done really good. Lots of great memories of the movie and my time in Basic Training.

Very few of those barracks exist today. The few that are still standing were left standing for historical purposes. I spent a week in one at Ft. Leonard Wood waiting for our cycle to begin.

Bill heard Harold was... on his way out, showed up at the police station in Harold's hometown and just asked them, "Bring me to Harold". I remember tearing up a bit when I heard this, 'cause it was, I believe, one of Harold's children telling the story. I didn't know either of them, obviously, but just... glad they worked it out, y'know?

Supposedly, Ramis was in the works adapting the book "Guru" for a Del Close biopic, and Sony had rights. Sony also owned The Second City, where Bill Murray had some sort of deal where if they ever made a Del movie he would play Del and produce the film. Eventually, Ramis dropped the project due to the impasse, and instead directed *Year One* with Michael Cera and Jack Black.

Honestly, the biggest laugh for me when I first saw this followed the "Aunt Jemima" scene in the kitchen, when there's a long silent shot of an empty bedroom before the two of them pop out of the cedar chest with "well, that was interesting".

Far from “lesser mainstream,” this film was the second biggest U.S. money-maker in 1981, second only to the equally most excellent “Superman II,” it also is really Murray’s breakout film. “Meatballs” did OK, and he made a big impression in “Caddyshack” in a supporting role, but this established him as big box office material. It’s part of a great comedy movie continuum/universe that includes “Animal House,” “Caddyshack,” “Ghostbusters” and many others, often using the same writers, directors, and actors. I'm thinking that it's possible that Ashleigh is referring to a more current "lesser maintream" and not so much an '80's mainstream construct. Now 40 years later, I think most would agree that the Bill Murray's continuum of successful movies and endearing personas, with the common threads of cinemagic that are his alone, unfairly left Stripes kinda lost, except for us children of the 70's that were there to most fully enjoy him and John Candy and friends in the day. Because Stripes is a R-Rated movie...it never played on ol Broadcast TV and even on cable gets a lot less airtime. Therefore it is less well known then a lot of films that Murray was in that are PG. In the day it was definitely a phenom but the further you move from the 80's the less likely peeps are to have seen it for that reason. Still a great film tho.

I'm glad you like the movie! I grew up in the military and right now I'm an army wife for a few more months. My husband is finally retiring after 22 years. I've been a military dependent more than half of my life. It may it's even funnier because the first time I saw this I was living in West Germany in Middle School. That was the early '80s during the Cold war. So that added a whole new twist to it. I'm on your patreon so I will send you a message to remind you but summer is coming up and I know you love Bill Murray like I love Bill Murray so you need to watch the movie Meatballs. The only thing I will say is that Bill Murray is in charge of a bunch of young summer camp counselors. You can't start your summer without seeing meatballs. It is hilarious and one of my favorite movies and it's also inspiring movie. No more spoilers. You made my day Miss Ashleigh!🙌👏👍💗 Great reaction!

I lived in Nuremburg in 88-92 yeah I loved it also Wurzburg 94-96. But yeah meatballs was really good. the 2nd was ok and the 3rd just sucked. But I want BRCC (black rifle coffee company) to review this movie. As well as Sgt. Bilko I was in Wurzburg when that came out and watched it with a bunch of soldiers! That made the movie even funnier

When I went to basic training, I was informed I had to watch this movie, since it was actually filmed at Ft. Knox Kentucky (The Home of Armor) where I had 16 weeks of basic and AIT to be come a Cavalry Scout. You may ask what kind of training and my answer is, "AAAAARRRRRMMMMMYYYYYYY Training, Sir!"

Stripes is a magnificent movie! Up there with my favs (Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters). One of the nice things about Stripes is that it didn't take a direct "dump" on the concept of the military yet managed to address how crazy it all can be. And not only was Harold Ramis talented, he was a babe!

We didn't go to a lot of movies when my dad was alive, but after my dad died, my mom cut loose and took us to see a LOT of movies. This was the early 80's. I remember seeing Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with wide eyes and mouth open, Road Warrior, Conan the Barbarian and a whole slew of other R-rated movies not recommended for 9yos. Best time of my childhood!

One piece of trivia: The goofy electrician named "Nitro" (Toby Huss) is from my hometown (Marshalltown, IA), and his dad taught chemistry at the high school. I was his lab assistant (to help pay for tuition) while attending the local junior college.

Kelly's Heroes. Not billed as a comedy, but it does have a great (true!) premise and some pretty funny moments, esp. with Don Rickles, Carrol O'Conner, and Donald Sutherland in it! Also has one of the great movie songs ever, "Burning Bridges". Maybe in my top 10 all time favorite movies. Would be really fun if Ashley would check it out one Monday!!
