Bill to disestablish the Church of England introduced in parliament

On December 6th 2023, Lib Dem peer Paul Scriven introduced a Private Member's Bill to disestablish the Church of England in parliament. Cries of "not content" were heard at the introduction of this bill - before members had even had a chance to read it. Members of the House of Lords do our democracy no favours by seeking to block a key constitutional issue of disestablishmnet from even being debated.

that is the fear. While officially there is no link between Islam and our government. The increasing number of Muslim MP's who put faith before duty and British interests (particularly when Israel is concerned) is worrying. Additionally Muslims have shown that they are prepared and willing to use violent means to intimidate and control MP's into support their religious beliefs. Fundamentally the difference is this. Christianity is a non-violent religion, built on sacrifice and martyrdom. Jesus and the thousands of martyrs that followed him in the foundation of the religion showed that a cause that you believe strongly in should be one in which you are willing to die, not one which you are willing to kill. Islam is a religion spread by those willing to kill for it, and belief in islam is spread by violence and intimidation. Towards non-believers and those choosing to abandon the faith. Our western society and culture is fundamentally linked to Christ and christianity. As an atheist I can acknoledge that the church has given us many things and set down many of the cultural values we hold dearly today, including religious tolerance (see the 30 year war). It would be a shame to lose that religious identity, especially if it promotes Islam into a position of dominance.

This reduces the privilege of the antiquated church of England , that is all. Most of the country isn't Christian, so it should have nothing to do with the state. Regardless of whether people in Britain still go to church or not Britain’s laws are based solely on Christian beliefs. Being welcoming to other religions should never undermine our laws, they are sacrosanct.
