Former NBA star Bill Walton took part in a news conference Tuesday morning with the Lucky Duck Foundation to address the issue of homelessness in San Diego.
Though the event was to call attention to a new Lucky Duck Foundation initiative, which will routinely grade the county's 18 regional leaders on the job they're doing when it comes to addressing homelessness, Walton took aim at Mayor Todd Gloria once again.

I mean republican states are by in large useless to America with the exception of Texas. Where Democrat states can be progressive to a point of failure, republican states refuse to change to the point where they all but die. Texas is probably the greatest Republican state and they don't even have a reliable power grid in times of crisis. Civilians couldn't get power and the ones that did got charged a 💩ton for running heat instead of freezing. America across the board has a stagnant government problem and its the citizens fault. Everyone has willingly opted into republican vs Democrat bs and depending on what side you pick, you blame literally everything on the other side and ignore your own parties faults. If Americans stopped fanboying parties and instead voted for people who actually got things done regardless of party alliegence, then the country might actually improve. Won't happen though Edit: last thing. America is a country that's built on invidualism (selfishness). There should always be a healthy amount of individualism to avoid people getting abused on an individual level. But Americans all seem to believe "my way or the highway" there is no compromise and most of them don't seem like they want to sacrifice anything for the betterment of the country. If life has to be worse in some areas for it to be better overall it ain't worth it to most Americans.

Bravo Bill. His plight is something many good taxpaying citizens are dealing with these days. Sadly, what Bill is saying about the homeless situation is happening all over California~ from San Diego, Los Angeles to San Francisco. Parts of the city are just over run with homeless. Most homeless being mentally ill, drug or alcohol dependent and desperate. For the wealth that this state has or even the country. Why is this? Bill made some great points. We need leaders who are willing to pull up their sleeves and do the work. Not sway to popular opinion for political benefit. Lasting solutions not bandaids then move on to the next thing. Starts with good leadership and ends with good leadership. Hope Bill gets his wish. Thank you Bill for standing up for your community.

Their refusal to raise the minimum wage while the price of everything ESPECIALLY housing is why this has happening. Mr . Walton is speaking from a super privileged point of view. Interesting. We live in a little mountaintown. About 20 homeless ex-construction workers(jobless), hair stylist(shopless), an arborist who writes a column in a Silicon Valley shopper magazine(full-time jobless), a couple veterans, a prostitute, and various other local alchoholics, lived under four county bridges. I fed them homemade soup once per week for three years..... the least I could afford to do. So--- I got a good feeling about the "haves" attitudes and the "have-nots". At age 70 I am slipping into poverty, myself. I know how poorly my community thinks of me now. I don't drink, drugs, swear, fart, or smell. My kindness was labeled as "aiding and abutting those people". Those undesirables. Not even a single chicken was donated for the soup in three years(2013 -2016).

It is not easy to solve this problem. The costs of living in San Diego has increased so much. Land is so expensive. No one wants a homeless shelter next to them or even in their neighborhood. The weather in San Diego allows homeless to live year round. The homeless taking over parks, beaches, etc. is not ok. Our Governor had a surplus of $97 billion. Spending money and buying property and building studios, and 1/2 bedroom units for the homeless would help. They would have to built withing 1 or 2 blocks of mass transit stations. Rules would have to be followed and enforced. I have heard of people who were given housing but left because the others around him were too rude and noisey. I lived in San Diego and was born there. I was living there in Pacific Beach for 20 years before moving away last year. It was bad then, and obviously worse now. I didn't vote for Todd Gloria for Mayor. Run for city council Bill, IF you really want to win back your city. And then don’t apologize for implementing reasonable, smart, common sense city policies. You’ll also need to get a three member majority to pass required city ordinances. If you don’t do all of this, then all the time you spend trying to convince your council with your words will remain MEANINGLESS. Democrats have won and will continue to win, and YOU lose!

Shared public space! I'm here in Oakland and it's the same mess. Lake Merritt on wknds is a parking lot. You can't walk on the walkways. Garbage is everywhere. Vendors are more important than enjoying nature. I just came back from downtown Denver and it looked like paradise

Denver is starting to have the same problems and it’s getting worse rapidly with no answers on the horizon. Downtown Denver is not safe. I hope we get leaders that can focus on these complex issues. I’m doubtful :(

Todd Gloria came into our south of the border traffic conjested community of San Ysidro to pitch the newest in an already clustered line of low income multi-unit housing disregarding the car pollution and parking space local home owners have to endure. He walks around like he's the President of the United States all important with his bodyguard wearing his expensive suits. After the televised speach he walked by me, I called he's name but like a fart in the wind just went by..so I kept asking to speak to him until his publicist told me to reach out to Vivian Moreno the person in charge of MY District.... he was there 6 feet in front of me..They' are all A-holes in it for the money and not for the people.

Homeless go where it is warm. Vet's from local bases go homeless here regularly. Many are not from here, due to their service here. Remember "Support the Troops"? Perhaps it is that here in La Jolla, the Veteran's Administration Hospital has so many Veterans on our streets, and most of them that I see here anyway, served their country. It may affect perspective seeing more of the local homeless being wounded, in such a beautiful place. Veterans would be a significant part of the problem tackled if we gave soldiers solutions. Start there maybe?

there are several federal programs to assist Veterans with housing and employment services, the problem is being stable enough for long enough to access them

But watching Marine graduation from boot camp the other day reminds me that the drill instructor took pride in the fact that these graduates now know how to make their beds and get a haircut when needed these things and other basics were pounded in their heads and should be still there regardless of their injuries human behavior hasn't changed but leadership has if I'm laying on a sidewalk and someone is urinating beside me I'm going to say something even if offends the other party because I believe that deep inside his. Mother taught him its wrong and he's got to feel a bit guilty so he should except the criticism but to let him just piss on me is my fault for lack of courage or example the best would be having their peers lead them out of these bad habits every successful program I've seen is run by peers not by leaders that haven't been there before get the homeless to run the homeless add get a backbone people set an example
