Great video, one tip or combination of two in one is I either like to bare shaft ever so slightly weak to account for my feathers and wraps adding weight to the tail end and effectively stiffening the shaft slightly or I add enough electrical tape on the tail end to weigh exactly what my wraps and feathers would

Glad to see you’ve got a trad bow on the channel now! It’s been cool to see how relevant they’ve become in the modern age of archery!

Yes, I tried it with all my heart back in the early 90s but never got what I thought was good enough. I will probably try it again in the coming years. Will be fun to follow along with Cody on this journey. Have a great day.

@@bill-winke I’m in the process of trying it now! It’s been 1 year with the longbow, and I’m giving it all of this October. I see a mix of compound and trad in the long run. I’ve been enjoying this dream farm series. Looking forward to this fall!

All great tips right here! My advice to new traditional shooters is to not worry about bare shaft tuning until you have the proper form and arrow release. If you pluck the string every shot, you will never be able to get true arrow flight. If you are new, I would purchase "Byron Furguson- Become the arrow book". It's a great read and will teach you a lot! Happy shooting!

Good tips. I tried traditional with all my effort back in 1993. I spent literally two hours per day shooting for six months and never got very good. I could shoot well at about 15 yards but not well enough past that distance. My biggest problem was plucking. I never got away from that. I may try it again as I really enjoyed the process.

@@bill-winke Definitely give it another try , I'd love to see you get out there with a stick and string. Even if it's just for some doe patrol. okay, This is gonna be a long comment but here is a helpful tip to fix the plucking... I have to do this myself, every year when I start shooting again. I have 6 foot long by 4 foot tall chunk of Styrofoam, the bigger target the better and you'll see why here in a bit. FIRST, get 2-5 yards away from your target. The bigger the target, the further you can be away from it. No more than 5 yards though (for safety reasons). SECOND, pick out your spot that you want to hit but don't worry about actually hitting it. We can work on accuracy after we get the plucking of the string under control. THIRD, start drawing your bow and close your eyes. This is the point where you're focusing more on your release instead of where you are hitting. Once you get to your anchor point, hold the tension for a second or two, then start slowly applying more tension at the same time that you are relaxing your fingers. That will result in a smooth release. I do that about 100-200 times before it becomes natural for me again.. it's all muscle memory. To explain this a little more, This is the same principle as shooting a compound. Once you hit that backwall, you keep a constant pressure, almost like you're trying to pull the bow back further than it goes, once you release, the pulling force that you are doing makes your hand naturally go behind your head, like you are trying to touch the top of your shoulder with your fingers. With a recurve/longbow, if your hand goes sideways when you release, you are plucking the string. That affects 100% of your shots, especially at further distances. It'll make your arrows looking like they're flying sideways, because they are! Hopefully that was written clear enough to understand.
