I can relate to his song. My Grandmother raised me from 5 months old along with my father til I turned 18 and joined the Navy. She promised to buy me a bike one summer because my sister's had rec'vd bikes for Xmas. Summer came and true to her word as always we went to get it. Only problem being when we found one that I could ride, she didn't have enough to pay for it by a few dollars. $5.00 to be exact. She told me to sit on it and not to move off of it, she walked back home nearly 4 miles and returned with the money in dimes. Allie M. West May 9, 1902- Sept 26, 1986. *Grandma's Hands!* 📿☺📿

My Grandma passed away today at 101. I'm 49 and I have such beautiful memories of her. She taught me how to swim, play tennis and bought me my first turntable. I can't forget she bought me my first skateboard. When times got tough she let my wife and I move in with her. She always praised God and prayed for me. She will always be in my Heart. My friend sent me this song today and I had never heard it before. It hit real hard and it brought tears to my eyes, it's the truth and it is sung with so much soul..I hope everyone reading this as had a wonderful relationship with their Grandma like I did. Now I have to go out and find this on vinyl. LOVE. I WROTE THIS COMMENT 18 DAYS BEFORE MR. WITHERS PASSED. R.I.P

The first time I heard his song “Ain’t No Sunshine” in 1971, I was captivated by his voice and his lyrics. Bill Withers was a powerful and quiet poet of emotions with a lush, beautiful voice. May this gifted man Rest In Peace. P. S. Regarding “Ain’t No Sunshine”...Yes, he sang “I know” 26 times. I loved the song that much.

Still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. My Grandma was the epitome of perfect unconditional love. I could do no wrong in her eye's. She always found someone else to blame if i made a mistake. I was the youngest daughter of the youngest daughter so I was totally spoiled rotten. Only one girl and a bunch of boy's each generation. I was her last grandchild prior to her passing. She means everything to me and always will. My 'Happy place' is picturing myself with Grandma, sitting on her lap and snuggling with her. I have such pride when everyone in the family says that I look and sound just like her. She was a true lady. Cussed like a sailor hahaha but certainly a true lady. The first time I heard this song was, I guess ironically enough, right after my grandma passed away. That was... *easily* the most painful event / experience that I've had so far in my life. It was the first time I ever lost someone that I really loved. My grandma was like a second mother to me, and honestly she was my best friend. She's been gone for 6 years now and in all this time the only thing I've learned about death is that you never _really_ get over it- because you can't; you just learn to live with it as best as you can. That's really all we can do (or at least that's all I can do.) Anyways... I'm only bringing that up to highlight the influence this man has had on my life; and it's not _just_ with music, but even the way I view the world and other people. It's actually very hard for me to put into words lol, but I'll try 😉 I love music, I write and (sometimes) record my own- and it's amazing to me how *easily* he was able to convey his thoughts and feelings in such a natural & honest way through his lyrics... it's just something you don't see anymore. He really was such a talented songwriter- and (imo) so many of his songs are modern-day masterpieces: *Lean on Me, Grandma's Hands, Ain't No Sunshine...* I mean the list goes on and on. The fact that _so many people_ know his music, but don't know his name... is just unbelievable. He's made a lasting impact on contemporary music; to me, there will *never* be another Bill Withers. _RIP Bill, thank you for helping me through some really hard times & for inspiring me so much with your voice. I hope you got to see your grandma again man_ 🙏🏻🕊

This has reduced me to tears. I was having this conversation with my mother the other day; I’ve never lost someone who I really truly love.. 3 of my grandparents I never got to meet before they passed (they lived in Different countries) but my maternal grandmother; I’ve had the privilege of knowing her and talking to her throughout my life.. she was a stern mother to my mum and her siblings, but to me she’s always been my sweet granny 🥰 she even lets me say a bad word here and there 🤭 and she’s at an age now where I’m terrified of “that time” coming 🥺 I don’t know what I’ll do.. it makes me break down just thinking about it 💔 I used to listen to this simply because it’s a beautiful song by one of my favourites, but these days I get a lump in my throat and fill up with tears 😭 Thank you for taking the time to write this comment. Sometimes we think nobody understands how we feel, but everybody goes through it! I hope you find peace and comfort in your memories of her ❤️

@@esotericintrovert1669 Aw thank you for your comment 😊 I know how you feel 💯 it's very difficult to think about the inevitability of "that time" coming; one of my grandpa's has lung cancer and he's been in the hospital for the last three weeks getting progressively worse and worse (he actually just had a stroke the other day)- and the other is 86 (he'll be 87 this year) and I feel like I'm on the verge of losing both of my grandpa's in the next few years, if it even is that long... 😭 Like my grandma was a second mom to me, my grandpa (the one who's 86) has literally been the only father I've ever really known. I mean I have a father, but he sucks lol, and my grandpa has done for me way more than my real father could ever do or has ever done. I know eventually I'm going to lose everyone... life is so cruel like that. The only thing you can really do is spend as much time with them as you can, and let them know how much they mean to you. There really isn't enough time in the world to tell someone you love how much they mean to you; there just isn't and there never will be. I wish you and your family the best 🙂 take care, and thanks again!

Grandma's Hands is such a beautiful, bittersweet, classy song. No diggity is all about getting laid! SMH... And Angel, I'm sorry you didn't know your grandma. I still have two- even though I'm 44, and I can't see either of them right now because of covid-19. What a sad time this is... I wonder sometimes if Bill Wither passed to remind us of how excellent his music is, so we'll have it to help get us through this time.

I have one grandbaby and he came into my life because of his mama who was dating my son. I had him for 5 yrs when my son and his mom split up. It's been 2yrs since I saw him and I miss him dearly. I can't get mad at his mom because he's not mine by blood but by heart he's mine and he will forever be my 1st grandbaby and maws maws heart. I pray God will let me live long enough to see him again when he's at a age that I can reach out to him. If not if he ever hear this song I hope he will think of me and all the things we did together just like this song makes me think of my dear sweet Ma Bella as we called her. She loved all of her grandchildren. I love ginger snaps to this day because when she went to the store she always bought us back a bag of ginger snaps. The day came when she could no longer keep us because she lost her leg to diabetes and that hurt her so much. She's been gone a many years but she is still so missed. Love her and miss her and love and miss maws maws baby boy TJ

Grandma's hands Clapped in church on Sunday morning Grandma's hands Played a tambourine so well Grandma's hands Used to issue out a warning She'd say, "Billy don't you run so fast" "Might fall on a piece of glass" "Might be snakes there in that grass" Grandma's hands Grandma's hands Soothed a local unwed mother Grandma's hands Used to ache sometimes and swell Grandma's hands Used to lift her face and tell her She'd say, "Baby, Grandma understands" "That you really love that man" "Put yourself in Jesus' hands" Grandma's hands Grandma's hands Used to hand me piece of candy Grandma's hands Picked me up each time I fell Grandma's hands Boy, they really came in handy She'd say, "Matty don't you whip that boy" "What you want to spank him for?" "He didn't drop no apple core" ....But I don't have Grandma anymore If I get to Heaven I'll look for- Grandma's hands

***** In Bills' song, it is. In KalimbaKids' song (and mine), it's Nancy. Here's to all the parents who've made mistakes in disciplining their children ... we are legion. We have touched them too often and too harshly ... and too little. We have punished when we should have supported ... and stood by when we should have punished. We have corrected things that could have been turned into strengths and allowed flaws that did turn into tragedy. There are lots of ways to ruin a child and we've explored them all. Yeah ... it's Matty. And Nancy. And Bill. And Leonard. And .... For each of us, it's a different song and I think that Mr. Withers knew why.
@emmettk10 жыл бұрын
bill65761 You meant in *moonpie22399*'s song, it's Nancy. But I totally get your point. This kind of song is personal. We each have our own story and it hits each of us where we live.

My grandmother Emily died last week she was a beautiful woman great grandmother and provider she was strong and sacrificed everything so that her family will never have to be without she was truly a warrior, a gentle spirit. Since her death last Tuesday 5/5/2020 I have heard this song over and over again out at the store or on television, just randomly and it has been my comfort, to say the least. I miss her I wish she didn't have to go but it was her time my grandma was 92 man I was so sure she was gonna live forever......but that's ok I know she is with Poppi now.....Now she can rest. Thank you,, Mr. Bill Withers, for this great song throughout my life your music has always put me at ease bless you, and may you rip as well. To all the loved ones out there that have lost someone through this pandemic or plain old life. I dedicate this song to you may it bring you comfort as it has brought me. Peace & Love all.

Oh, boy. Grandma Quiquitos passed away at 2 AM on a really messy December 4th, 2018. I remember how I slept at 1 AM and something suddenly woke me up. She was really sick but, even on her last days, she still had that hard attitude and will to take care of every one around her and do what she loved: cooking and being with us. Oh, boy, if only I discovered this song one year ago, I wouldn't had felt so alone. Thanks for your sound, Billy.

My granddaughter had just turned two at Bill Withers' passing, and I ran to youtube to hear this song. It is my favorite now for a whole different reason than it had been while I was growing up: My little girl had a very compassionate look on her face while this song played, took my gnarled, old hand and held it up to her face, then kissed it. (I have custody of her through Foster care and will be adopting her; she IS my biological granddaughter who calls me "Grandma," and I love it.)
