Certain songs are so much Brian where he takes them so far past the original 3-4 chords that Keith would come up with they wouldn’t even be recognizable without him. Just Paint It Black, it was Brian that did the upstroke guitar strum that gives it that racing across the desert feel so that he could then add the sitar. Instead they acted rather “spoiled” about it, saying oh anyone can play bass, etc. They like being in control of things. You can hear in the Stones music the dichotomy between Jones' influence and the Richards / Jagger blues based music. It was Beggars Banquet where Jones was waning possibly due to his drug abuse. The Stones made some great music after Brian's departure, but it was never the same band again. (Ian Stewart conceded this in Stanley Booth's standard text *The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones* and so did Mick Jagger, albeit indirectly.) The colors faded; the band's sound became almost monochromatic. And yes, Brian deserves a co-writing credit on "Ruby Tuesday"--just as Bill deserves one on "Jumpin' Jack Flash." Jagger freely admits that he had nothing to do with writing "Ruby," and Keith certainly didn't compose it singlehandedly.

The Stones are my band and I love aspects of all 5 eras. (1- 1990 to Current touring do it till we literally die but make mediocre new music, 2- 76 to 86 Ronnie funky mixed bag, 3- classic mick Taylor live and great albums 4- 65 to 69 Brian Jones creative sounds and song and 5- 63 to 65 cover song era Everyone raves about era 3 with mick Taylor and no doubt it is exceptional. But for my money era 2 is the best because it shows the Stones at their most creative and innovative. It is also an outlier in the bands history in terms of their sound. All the other eras have a similar foundation (bluesy rock n roll). They are great but the songs flow together But from 65 to 68 you get such a diverse range of sound thanks largely to Brian and the results are magical. I would put these songs up against any other eras of theirs best songs. Think about it - paint it black, under my thumb, 19th nervous breakdown, standing in the shadow, think, I am waiting, Ruby Tuesday, night together, lady Jane, mothers little helper , out of time, backstreet girl, she smiled sweetly, she’s like a rainbow, we love you, dandelion, 2000 light years, child of the moon, street fighting man, no expectations and many more The mix of sounds, instrumentation, tempo, subject matter, feel and energy is incredible. It’s multi dimensional and expressive while poppy at the same time. The Stones are the greatest rock n roll band for sure, but for a short period Brian elevated their rock n roll music to artistic levels. They never have been able to repeat this because they’ve never had a guy of his vision, talent and willingness to take artistic risks. That’s how I remember Brian. The true artist of the rolling stones. Screw all the pettiness of who gets the writing credit or gets paid more, I did something that lifted the band that they’ve never been able to replicate themselves. Make no mistake, this is Mick’s favorite era of their music and deep down I think it’s Keith’s as well.

Brian Jones composed the riffs to the Stones' "The Last Time" (first original hit single), "Paint It Black", "Under My Thumb", "Jumping Jack Flash", the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" and more, but did not bother about getting proper credit and rights, while Jagger and Richards were only too happy to keep it that way.

@@LoryKohn In any collaborative composition everyone should be credited and paid. See 'Whiter Shade of Pale': the writing credits originally only listed Gary Brooker (chords and vocal melody) and Keith Reid (lyrics). In 2009, Matthew Fisher (organ riff) won co-writing credit for the music in a unanimous ruling from the Law Lords. There many other examples.

Really? Then why isn't Bill Wyman complaining? What "should" be true in your mind is simply not true in the real world or everyone who played on a record from the tambourine player to the drummer would be receiving equal royalties. You can say you would split things equally in your band, which is fine, but that would be the exception not the rule in general. @@wonder6789

Brian Jones wasn't a song writer but a contributor to songs. There's a big difference. Adding ideas to somebody else's song is not the same as coming up with the original song itself. People seem to have a hard time understanding the difference. As talented as Brain Jones was, he still couldn't write any songs on his own. Mick Taylor was similar, though he did try. But when you listen to his solo works, it's truly lacking in substance. Again, Taylor was also good at being a contributor to other people's songs.

Respectfully disagree. I think Queen had the right idea sharing the credit between the four of them.
@NorsePJ
@NorsePJ 9 ай бұрын
@@TheaterPup But with Queen it was different as they were all good song writers. The only band in history where every member wrote at least one hit record. When did Brian Jones ever write even one song by himself? It's a lot easier to contribute to already existing ideas. That's what musicians are supposed to do. But the song credit goes to the one who brought the song. Yes, I agree at times it would be nice if another member contributed something quite extra to the song, and I admit, Brian Jones did that at times, so some token credit could have been given. Still, as I said, it's a hell of a lot easier contributing to an already existing idea than bringing in your own. When did Jones ever do that? So, respectfully, we have to agree to disagree.

@@NorsePJ It wasn’t just that, the members of Queen contributed to each other’s songs. And no, it is not easy. Pretty presumptuous of you to say that about any element of the Stones music. Token???? That’s nonsense. His work is not merely “nice” or “extra.” His touches would bring a song to life. I have to question how familiar you are with 60s Stones if you think that. You are putting down his contributions because you have a narrow idea of what song writing is and how bands work in general. We will not be agreeing on this. Good day.

The Moody's also had some flute solos, like in "Legend of a mind"..and some live performances drew ecstatic applause from the concert goers. So, the flute as well as some other classical instruments like Nicky Hopkin's piano work have really added some special textures and nuances to an otherwise boring bass, drums, guitar and singer "rock" show. The late 60's and early 70's became a slug fest for the typical "rock"..ie; bass drums, guitar and singer, not saying that it all sucked, it certainly didn't. But most of the radio stations only played that "rock" part of their music even they they did have a variety in their albums.

The Hackney Diamonds are just that,working class blues dudes. Brian's mum taught piano, he was lucky. The classical rules are closely related to the jazz rules of harmony that he was fluent in,not just the blues.Classical and jazz guitarist never use the blues tuning that are used in blues and the blues based rock the Stones play that are combined with jazz/ pop and thus neo-classical elements of many of the more complex sounding Stones songs of the early years. Brian was into experimental music as well like Nicolas Cage in case you were wondering about it. The Stones can ace a blues with the best of them without him ,but that little touch of song writing magic has left for an actual reason, my friend. When Kieth Moon and John Bonham died, so too did their bands soldier on even though they were only drummers. Brian was even more important. It's been stated that in print Brian was axed because the material was not their anymore. But he knew the mutiny was about to happen. It's no big secret he was the writer, and I told you why.Formal classical or jazz music lessons are expensive, blues you can teach yourself if you are stubborn enough. Kieth is a master of those tunings.@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc
