Bill, I know you don't really like talking about it, but I'm grateful that you are somewhat open to discussing your trauma and how it shaped who you are. I am currently 27, a recent graduate with a seemingly useless degree, unemployed despite my efforts, and have waves of feeling overwhelmed from my childhood trauma. I know it shaped me to have the gifts that I have to help others when they are in the darkness, but I have yet to learn how to get along with my demons. Listening to you talk about how your rage left you intentionally distant from creating relationships, your previous inability to simply "have one drink", and the childlike desire to be liked by everyone due to the fear of being hurt left me feeling comforted and understood. I know that if I keep pushing uphill, eventually I'll get on level ground. Thank you for all lighthearted and sometimes deeply introspective fire-under-the-ass jokes. You are a blessing and I'm honored to call you my favorite comedian and an overall great dude.
@egglesseggsalad87033 жыл бұрын
Yea, bill talking about that really helps, even just him telling stories from his childhood in a comedic way kinda helps you remember similar things that you experienced in a goofy way compared to how they actually were, at least for me it does.

Compare the interaction between Burr and Gaffigan with that of Bill and Paul Verzi. You can detect his discomfort with certain people. He seems aggressively competitive-like he's trying to prove something. On the other hand, he plays nice with others. With his good friend Paul, he's like a caring big brother. There's clearly more than one side to BB. Gaffigan seems more centered, relaxed, and in control. He also seems more likable than Bill, here. Interesting. Just an observation.
@seankiesling20543 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I love Burr, hes my favorite current day comedian. But after watching this and a couple other podcasts I'm almost certain I wouldn't like him as a person. He actually comes like he a serious clinical case of ADHD in this or that he was off his meds for it. It's like no matter what Jim could say Bill would be snappy bit odd. Like overly snappy... almost intolerable

I like that Bill has enough respect for Jim that he doesn't even attempt to rail him ( I mean even just in a fun way) or challenge him to the extent he does with other people . There's a clear " this is one of the greats , we both know the other is funny , there's nothing to prove here" attitude .

@BjornIn19793 жыл бұрын
@@adorable3817 For Example, watch this video again, and pay close attention to both of their body language: Things seem to be fun and relaxed at the beginning until the topic of weight loss comes into play. EXACTLY at the 34:00 minute mark, start watching from 34:00 sharp and forward and watch closely how slowly and gradually Bill dismisses and shuts down everything Jim says about how it's unfair that his genetics suck and Todd Glass' are much better, regardless how much healthier and lesser he eats than Todd Glass and how much more he works out than Todd Glass, he still looks like he's in worse shape than Todd Glass... Bill doesn't care to listen to any of that, defends Todd for being better at taking care of his body than Jim ( with zero evidence to prove it) While Jimmy tries to make a point that, he tries very hard to stay in shape, works out everyday, but due to his poor genetics, he seems to be unable to slim down and have a figure he wishes he can have. He shows all his daily work outs on his phone via his Apple Watch "closing my rings everyday" Bill being the technophobe/luddite that he is (One of his Blind spots) He dismisses the whole thing, without even caring to understand what does "Closing your rings " mean, he (not wanting to seem ignorant to this "Ring" workout thing) becomes almost like a bully, making fun of everything Jim is trying to explain to him about his work outs, cuts him off mid sentence to tell him about his "troubles" in losing weight, while comparing Jim and his "body types" to same as "women nagging about their bodies" and proceeds to call him playground names such as "No gym Jim" or something along those lines, then he proceeds to sarcastically call him "Big Boned" while Jim still tries to be patient with him and still try to explain "it's all about the genes" "look at Rob Lowe, the dude is like 80!..." Again Bill having the bling spot that he has, all these ..Woosh! go right over his head, and proceeds to never acknowledge ANY words from Jim about his efforts to try to stay in shape and eat healthy. NO words of encouragement, nothing! This could all be due to Bill's childhood upbringing and how his dad never gave him any words of encouragement while growing up; on the contrary probably criticized Bill and his siblings for their shortcoming etc. It's a classic psychological viscous cycle of a man who's rubbed off his parent's ( dad's) shitty attitude and has not gone through proper therapy to understand and let go of it just yet... But we already know he's working on it, as he even opens up about his therapy sessions and admits how bad his father's dismissive and negative behavior towards him has rubbed off on him as an adult.

Agreed the point where Jim says “every time I talk to you I feel like I’m talking to a lawyer” felt appropriate

@@BjornIn1979 It's not ALL due to genetics. Jim is NOT a healthy eater. As long as he eats sugar, animal and flour products he will NEVER lose the excess weight. Carbs, as in complex carbs, like beans and potatoes are great!!!!! I yoyo dieted for over 30 years. Now I just Avoid sugar, Animal and flour products, and I have zero issues with weight - and I rarely get sick.

@@adorable3817 Jim was not saying it's all due to genetics. he was just stating the fact that genetics played a part in determining body weight, shape, metabolism etc. Bill could have simply acknowledged that and added on his thoughts about how to best manage body weight, but instead he denied that well known fact while giving attitudes to his guest.

Jim and Bill literally sound like old friends who have great affection for each other but know that if they spend too long talking, they would argue. So as they grew older they learnt to tolerate each others idiosyncrasies. And Jim is absolutely right, genetics does play an important part in weight gain. Thats a scientific truth. But diet plays a larger role and especially the diet when you were young. To undo the damage of years of insulin resistance takes hard work . So no bread and sugar.
@haveabanana29303 жыл бұрын
No carbs and fast all day. Fasting is the best, for weight loss, mood stability, digestive issues, etc. Gaining weight was a survival mechanism, but humans weren't meant to constantly shovel food in their faces, lol, there used to be periods of scarcity.
