8-ball billiards, often simply called 8-ball, is a popular pool game played around the world. It's typically played on a rectangular table with six pockets, one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. The game is played with a cue ball and 15 object balls, numbered 1 through 15. The balls are split into two groups, solids (balls 1-7) and stripes (balls 9-15), with the 8-ball being black.
The objective of 8-ball is for a player to pocket all of their designated group of balls (solids or stripes) and then legally pocket the 8-ball to win. The game begins with a break shot, where the cue ball is used to break up the triangular rack of 15 balls. If a player pockets a ball on the break, they are assigned either stripes or solids based on the type of ball pocketed, unless both types are pocketed, in which case they can choose their group. If no balls are pocketed on the break, the next player takes a turn.
Gameplay involves taking turns with the opponent. A player continues their turn as long as they legally pocket a ball and do not commit any fouls. Fouls include failing to hit any balls with the cue ball, hitting the opponent’s balls before their own, pocketing the cue ball (scratching), and pocketing the 8-ball out of turn or in an uncalled pocket.
Players must call their shots for the 8-ball, specifying the intended pocket; this rule varies among casual and professional play, with professional rules often requiring every shot to be called. Strategy in 8-ball comes from choosing shots that not only pocket balls but also position the cue ball favorably for subsequent shots, and defensively positioning the cue ball to make the opponent's next shot difficult if a shot to pocket a ball isn't available.
8-ball is enjoyed at various levels from casual play in bars and pool halls to professional competitions and tournaments. It’s recognized for its blend of strategy, skill, and a bit of luck, making it a beloved game among both casual players and serious enthusiasts.
In this variant, you play solo and must pocket all 15 balls before time runs out, with the 8-ball, as usual, being the last one to be pocketed.
