Practice and knowing where the cue is going with the stick you play with is what’s important. If you have a rifle that consistently shoots 1” to the right you adjust your aim, you don’t have to go buy a new rifle. Professional pool players have done pretty good with maple shafts down through the years. Low deflection is still deflection and you still have to adjust your aim to compensate.

LD shafts reduce deflection by only about 30 percent. On full table shots it makes a big difference, but you would not hit that diamond without compensating.

Thank you so much for the tips! I notice you don't use a carbon fiber shaft. Someone told me recently it's the best shaft to use. Is that true? Also, do you prefer breaking with a magic rack or a physical triangle, such as the delta-13? Thanks!

Store it with no lateral force to the shaft. (Don't leave it leaning on a wall, for example) For home cues use a wall rack to store them vertically or broken down and in a pool cue case.

Hello... I am a beginner, I would like to purchase my own pool cue. Going off looks alone the McDermott SP11 catches my eye. Being a beginner, would this be a good starting point or should I be looking at cheaper options? Also what would be the better cue weight you’d recommend starting with? Thanks!
@SethKotta
@SethKotta 5 жыл бұрын
If it's in your price range I would say go for it. McDermott makes good cues, so your learning curve won't be as steep. Sure, you run the risk of spending more money on something you wind up not enjoying as much as you thought, but you'll have a higher chance of sticking with a hobby if, you know, you actually enjoy doing it.

I just started playing again after 20+ years and have 25 years of experience. It consumed my life and before I stopped playing I was of the best players in my area. I just bought a Cue Tech pool cue which has a low deflection shaft. I used to be an expert at making extreme angle cuts on object balls frozen to the rail. With this low deflection shaft, after 4 trips to pool halls to play, (about 45 min each time) I have been unable to make even one of those type of shots. It seems to me to be almost impossible. So the jury is still out for me on whether a low deflection cue is better or not.

When i researched LD shafts, I found that Predator was awarded patents on the LD 314 shaft n the CF Revo shafts. That means...they invented them. I went with the guys with the patents and now shoot a P3 with a Revo 12.4. It looks, feels and shoots amazingly. Yes, it's an investment in my progression as a pool player.

Venom thanks for video's you do. I have been playing for 37 yrs now. On and off now this low defection stuff is sometimes gets confusing. I have played with cues of all types. The low deflation shafts are stiffer and I feel I loose feel with them. So unfortunately I still shoot with the shaft my grandfather give me. It was made in 72 or 73. Needless to say it's not low deflection lol. Unfortunately my cue was stolen and in the market but I cant find that 1. The feel of the new ones are very stiff don't feel like my old cue.

Of course we did not know about low deflection cues when we used 13 and 14 mm shafts. We did know about "spine". I would select cues by holding them horizontal in the closed bridge just behind the ferrule and check the bend in the cue. Good exercise for the wrist
@johns4476
@johns4476 5 жыл бұрын
Richard, I have lost a couple or more cues (mostly my fault), but I had a McDermott in the early-mid 90's that to me had the feel you describe. I liked it at the time. I don't know if they typically play that way today, but you might give them a try. I have also had a couple Mucci's which I developed a feel for though I thought they were stiffer. I'm in the market again which is why I came upon this video, but I might end up going to a pro (or semi) that knows my game for the ultimate advice. Sometimes, you see things from the sidelines that the player doesn't.

So if you go to an unfamiliar pool hall and look at the rack of house cues, is there a quick visual inspection or test you can do to find the "best" stick almost at a glance?
@omhril7100
@omhril7100 5 жыл бұрын
Visually, look at the tips, specifically the shape and state of them (rounded or flat, worn down, mushroomed etc.), and also what type of ferrule/tip: cues with shorter and darker ferrules usually have harder tips, and are thus more suitable for breaking, whereas shorter and lighter ferrules commonly have softer, sharper, tips and thus give you more precision in play. What I do for testing is to bang it slightly against my palm and listen whether it's cracked, roll it on a table to see if it's crooked, feel the weight (although this is preference, I prefer my playing cue light and my break cue on the heavier side), and the state of the butt end, as sometimes you may wanna grab it and hate to have a nail there.

What about the stick gives it high/low deflection? Is it the curvature of the tip? More curve, more deflection?
@NotSoFast71
@NotSoFast71 5 жыл бұрын
Weight/mass at the tip end of the shaft. More weight/mass, more deflection. Also, today's low deflection cues are made to have the same amount of deflection no matter what part of the shaft is "up" when you shoot. Old cues made of one solid piece of wood bent easier in one direction due to the grain of the wood and would deflect the cue ball more or less depending on what part of the shaft was "up". This is why Meucci and others marked their shafts with a dot near the joint, so you always shot with it facing up and the left/right deflection would be as close to each other as possible. Wood bends easier with the grain that against it. Now, good wooden shafts are made of triangle "pie" shaped pieces laminated together to form a cylinder, eliminating the "grain" effect from the equation.

Expensive pool cues give players a false sense that they improve one's game. Any straight cue with a correctly shaped tip will play as well as a $1,000 custom cue in the right hands. Most hustlers pluck the pigeons using a house cue or a sneaky Pete. They don't need some exotic low-deflection carbon fiber cue to walk out with the money.

Wow..... I thought deflection only imparted on cue when using break shot power applied with side spin...and it was more of the tip hardness and condition(i use medium Elk tip on 12mm shaft shaped in nickle ruffed to create "bite" and hold chalk more consistently) that would mode of the spin that made cueball deviate off line.... But that HD shaft sent the cue almost a diamond off target... Frightening if i had to use... But then again.. All shafts always been when compressed end to end at the weak point causing a "bow" to occur... And that bowing is what shaft deflectionis???? And identifying your deflection direction is relevant because it can be harnest to add more side spin the natural but also minimize any deflection issues just by rotating that bowing direction depending on intent...... A low deflection shaft. Will not bow or technically will not bow enough to harness it .... However is wont be something to inadvertently cause miss aims.... Im currious how much low deflection shaft bends on power break draw shot... Slow motion flims of some players power strokes with tip follow though on the table are so violent that it seems the shaft should have been close to snapping.....
@NotSoFast71
@NotSoFast71 5 жыл бұрын
Deflection is worse with a shaft that has a higher mass near the tip. Less with a low mass tip area. The newest low deflection shafts are made of carbon fiber and have an almost weightless "foam" core in the tip end of the shaft and in the ferrule.

low deflection cue has less Feel to it. easier to put a ball down intended line though. They jump poorly though. A good pre shoot routine is key with low deflection because the ball goes more down the shot line which is good unless you get down slightly off line. With a regular type shaft one can always squirt the cue ball back to the intended path without re adjusting the shot line as much. The low deflection will make you a better player quicker but it does take away some nuances of pool play which can make you a better overall player but much more time is involved.

You should have added that low deflection cues are designed more for using parallel english and not pivot english. The non LD shafts actually work better for pivot english because of the shorter natural pivot point. The pivot point on a lot of LD shafts is too long to be practical.
