A british radio station prank called the lead singer of Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong, October 2006, waking him up when "September ended" ... Cruel but funny joke.

For those people getting all upset about this- It is legit. It was done by Radio City in Liverpool (England, UK, as someone seemed unsure about that, the ones who broadcast from the radio city tower in Liverpool). The whole thing was organised properly with Green Day's agent and I think most people around Billie Joe Armstrong were in on it. I'm pretty sure he saw the funny side once he got over the shock of being woken up. Yes it's a sad song, but the guy has a sense of humour too. They didn't taunt him, they didn't bully him. The radio station went to a lot of effort to organise the whole thing. I think there's some people on here who take life a wee bit too seriously. Besides, if Radio City hadn't done it, someone else would have.

Actually Billie has said that he hates it when people make jokes about it and seriously its something personal and it's totally not ok to joke about it especially when Billie himself has informed people on the matter and his opinion about the jokes.

Totally agree with the first comment. This song is some kind of catharsis. An attempt to work with the so-called "experiencing". Unfortunately, sad and painful experiencing, connected with the member of the family. The idiots who dare to make fun of it, should think over the background first. It would be the same as if they took photos with the boots near the Danube in Budapest. If they knew that this monument was about the Jew victims during the WWII, they would think twice - and put the camera away. People make fun of everything right now - no freaking limitations. However they should think that they devalue everything in this case - without the goddam right to do so. Thus, I hope those prankers took their punishment for such a disrespect. In losing the audience at least...

So this is the first I've actually heard the prank, I remember my mum telling me about it after I first started getting into Green Day and I just kinda looked at her blankly like "you know this songs about his dead father right?" :/ and after reading the comments and people claiming this is fake, I have a few points; 1) "it's fake because it doesn't sound like him" idk about you guys but I sound really different when I first wake up and it takes me at least 10-15 minutes to actually sound like me in the morning 2) "what about the timezones" well if you guys bothered to listen to that radio announcer, they're based in Liverpool, England. So they're a number of hours ahead of the US (probably about 5/6 maybe) so if it was about 5 or 6 in the morning here it would just be turning midnight wherever billie joe may be. When people tell me about this cruel joke and say "Billie Joe is an asshole because he swore at them" well if your dad died and you wrote a song in his memory, would you like people making fun of it?

Not only did he go through the grief of his dads death, but he spent time and energy to write that song. even if this vid is faked, I would feel bad just thinking about this after his dad died.

This is pretty cruel. Like imagine losing your dad at the age of 10, making a song about it years later after becoming a famous rockstar, and then having a radio station call you in the middle of the night because it was the start of October and the song you’d made was called “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. I’d be upset and pissed off if I was Billie. I can imagine Billie was really upset after the call because of his response to what the person on the phone said and they made fun of the song title which is the name of a song that has a really sad meaning based off a true story. People saying he probably saw the funny side need to realise how badly it affected him. All these years later he still thinks about his dad every day, and he’s cried many times before while performing this song.
