Very useful, thank you. As a native Cantonese speaker, we have no concept whether a word is voiced or unvoiced (only aspiration or not).

Hi Billie, Could you explain difference between ɔː and əʊ sounds? Please. I know əʊ is diphthong, but I can not distinguish them.

Yes, of course. I'll consider this for a future video.

Billie, your teaching style is so clear. I watched so many videos but yours is a cut above the rest. May God bless you. Just one explanation is needed. I tried to feel the vibration but sometimes it is not clear when you put your hand on the throat. Can you help?

Thank you for your lovely comment! Make sure your hand is near your voice box and just place your fingers lightly, not too strongly. Which sounds is the most difficult?

@@BillieEnglish thanks for the reply. When I put my hand near the throat for 'p' and 'b' they both seem to have the same movement of the throat whereas vibration is pretty clear in 'g'

A QUESTION: If our vocal cords DO NOT vibrate when we whisper, so how on Earth can we still pronounce voiced sounds? I can totally produce the Z sound, for instance, when I'm whispering, so how is it possible to produce voiced sounds without vocal folds vibration?
@BillieEnglish Жыл бұрын
Hello Wagner! A good question! When you whisper you can obviously speak but all the sounds are unvoiced and therefore the vowel sounds you produce when whispering, are in fact 'different' sounds = their unvoiced alternatives. You can test this by putting your hand on your throat and whispering - you will notice there is zero vibration and the tone is much quieter than when you produce the regular voiced vowel sound. Juts say: A E I O U twice and the difference will because obvious. There is no way to transcribe whispering as far as I know. I hope this helps!

@@BillieEnglish But if all sounds become voiceless when we whisper, then how can we still feel and hear the difference between voiced and voiceless sounds? Apparently voicing isn't the only difference between the voiced sounds and their voiceless counterparts. There must be something else other than voicing, something I still can't quite put my finger on.

i’ve always wondered why my accent almost completely dissapears when whispering, watching this made me realize my main problem is that i’m really bad at voicing certain consonants!! i have never really been able to work on my accent because i didn’t know the source of the problem, i knew i have problems with vibrating my vocal cords but i didn’t realize the extent of the problem so i couldn’t work on it!! now i can finally try to train myself, learn how and when to voice consonants, abd finally become much better and more confident in my pronunciation!! do you have any tips? thank you so much

Great to hear that! I think the first step in resolving anything in life is awareness and it sounds like you've already taken this first step! I think the next thing is to hear the difference between voiced and unvoiced sounds and FEEL the difference. Every sound also has a physiological component - something we sometimes forget! After that, you can start practising producing these sounds in words and short chunks of language. I have videos on all the various sounds which you could start with. I also collaborate with an AI pronunciation app called ELSA which offers even more practice you can do on your own - the app gives you immediate feedback on your speaking. I posted a link to it in the description box :-) I hope this helps!
