I remember a crackling unease and disquiet when hearing this for the first time, years ago, as Liam Neeson's Schindler wandered wordlessly, pensively around his bedroom. With the portrayal silently broadcasting a pivotal moment in his life and in his heart. As Holliday's voice oozed into the air, it seems to encapsulate perfectly what is transpiring in the film thus far. Schindler's enormous wealth, his "...more money than any man can spend in a lifetime." is vacuous and immaterial, save the fortune he already spent placating Amon Goeth and other nazi officials to preserve his skilled workforce, and the exponential fortune he's about to spend buying the lives he's come to know. To negotiate the capitalistic nazi minefield as "...a profiteer of slave labour... a criminal" as logistical red tape (the oft-bemoaned 'paperwork' in this film) acts as his day's Red Sea, and to wrest them from the jaws of doom. From being another terminal train to pass through the insatiable maw of Birkenau. From being another anonymous, immolated set of ashen statistics. It's a fantastic scene that uses this song profoundly. You can almost hear Oskar's heart pound and his breath arrest, oblivious to the naked woman asleep his bed, as he fully concludes what is actually important, human and true.
