Billionaire Builds Golf Wonderland In His 39-Acre Backyard | Green Fees | Golf Digest

Billionaire Charles Cohen built 39 acres of golf greens and holes in his own backyard with the help of golf course architect Michael Lehrer. The yard features 10 pins, 70 target combinations, 3 sand traps, tee markers, ball washer, one green that covers 11,000 square feet of artificial turf, man-made waterfalls, and 7 tee boxes. Lehrer uses 180 tons of crushed rock to shape the green then 10 tons of stone dust to smooth the surface. All told, the course cost Cohen between $100,000 - $200,000.

why? Its a fake turf green... If that was a real green, yeah your looking big money. Not just in install and plumbing, but the maintenance and equipment needed. Maintaining a real green is no joke... You would need to cut it every other day, aerate it twice a year, stay on top of fungus and other harmful growth. Its a full time job.

I would expect a billionaire to have 18 holes with Kikuyu fairways and Bent greens and fleet of ground staff. Like for instance Kerry Packer's private course (Ellerston) Now that is a course. Only 30 rounds ever played on it per year.

No that's totally unnecessary. Firstly he built this to practice on not play. Golf is a social game. He plays in this country club and meets people. Having 18 holes is utterly pointless and gets boring VERY FAST!! One hole used for practice is perfect.

It's funny reading these comments thinking it's simple to build a course on par with Augusta on 39 acres. I actually own 39 acres myself and you can comfortably fit 9 holes on it. It all depends how your land is layed out and the quality of land. You probably could literally SQUEEZE 18 holes in that space but that would require a lot of criss crossing fairways, sharing greens, and just an all around headache.

The Villas on the Gold Coast, Australia is impressive too - iseekgolf.com/courses/australia/qld/gold-coast/the-villa. Owned by billionaire Toshiaki Ogasawara, but sadly it's being turned into a residential development. 2 x 9 holes with last hole hitting into the mansion over the lake. Master bedroom balcony has tee box to hit onto greens. Had the privilege to play there a handful of times. The grass is like carpet.
