Nebraska politicians caved to billionaires, passed a controversial school voucher program, and pissed off Nebraskans. So the people got a measure on the ballot to overturn it. Now they’re on the verge of an improbable victory to save public education in a deep red state.

While I have a lot of conservative views and I live in a very red state, things like this are what is making me vote blue this election year. The radical conservatives behind this are insane. Many of them grew up in the 50's and 60's so they know first hand how much taxpayer-funded services benefit the people from education to buying an affordable home. In the end, it's all so they can line their pockets at the suffering of people; children no less.

I wish you luck, I've lived in both a deep red and deep blue state and I feel this election is going to be really hard for the center right. These private voucher programs have three underlying goals: 1) Profit above anything else, including above quality education. 2) Control the kinds of education to ones beneficial to their own political ends. 3) Force those who aren't selected into their programs (typically but not exclusively poor, brown, and / or disabled) to accept limited education that pushes them into low wage occupations. It's about robbing the public of money, critical thinking, and class mobility. All so those in power can have unchecked free reign. It's a pinnacle example of bankrupt social morality.

1. People wouldn't send their kids to schools that have bad education if they had a choice. 2. This gives parents the choice on where their students should go. 3. Public schools are literally the worst thing for our kids and everyone that owns a home is forced to pay for those schools regardless of if they have children going to them. 4. The public school system in America is really bad and they have no reason to do better because majority of people are forced to use them and pay for them.

@Michaels1059
@Michaels1059 54 секунд бұрын
@zacharmstrong7807 1) Public schools wouldn't be do bad if they got the funding they deserved. 2) Having said that, if private schools want public dollars, then they shouldn't be allowed to deny any student admission. But that is currently not the case, so most of the taxpayers are paying into a system they can't benefit from. 3) Watch again the whole bit in the video about fly by night grifters. The unregulated private school systems prey on un/misinformed parents. 4) Parental choice should not supersede the child's right to a quality education. Private schools can and often limit how much their students learn because it doesn't align with their political goals. 5) At the end of the day, given the high failure rate of for-profit private schools, this ultimately robs our children of years of education they can never get back. You'd be surprised how many kids from these for-profit schools graduate only to find their schools did not prepare them for college or adult life. Remember, private & for-profit schools are not in it for your child's education. They're in it for money and anything else that helps increase their profits.

The problem with vouchers is that most private schools still cost more than the value of the vouchers. So regular people still can't afford it, it just means that already wealthy people, who are already putting their kids in private schools, now get to tale their money out of the public school system and reduce their tuition bill.

Any change will be a failure until a successful model is given by the free market. Our Public schools are failing. My dad worked for a private for profit college that offered $30k (B average in grades to qualify) in tuition savings to make the cost lower than attending a state university for the same degree. I’m looking at enrolling in WGU which is a flat $7,500/semester (2 semesters/yr) for unlimited credits obtained during that period. My friend completed his English degree for $15k in one year and I’m planning on doing the same. I think that the school voucher system probably needs to be further regulated to ensure some outcomes but should not be repealed. I think there are positives of private industry if done correctly. Inner city schools are horrible. If a family wants to homeschool there kids, why shouldn’t they help home schooling parents? $100k per year is not much in dense cities LOL. I live in SF and with taxes and rent being so high. Why shouldn’t I get $7,500 per year from the school voucher to help me teach my kids? Man I’m really BALLING LOL off that. Fk this video.

But you, patriot, can circumvent that by putting Repubs in charge who will pass laws to let parents siphon money out of the evil public school system through "vouchers" they can use to send their kids to private schools. As of 2022, there were 49.6 million students enrolled in the US K-12 public school system. None of these crackpot conservatives will admit that their privatization schemes, even if they'd had a 50 year head start, will EVER create a private school market big enough to educate even half of those 50 million public school kids. All they really want is to defund the public school system & leave everyone who's not a rich Republicon stuck with home schooling their own kids.

I see a lot of comments along the lines of “you should ask why parents wouldn’t want their kids in public schools”. I think this ignores that there are public schools that are sought after in some areas… our system ensures that there is not a level playing field even among public schools. Some of them offer fantastic opportunities for students… but most of the rural schools, or schools in more impoverished urban areas don’t get that kind of funding. They instituted vouchers in Arkansas, currently 7,000 a year for tuition assistance. The good private schools cost a heck of a lot more than that. So most people are still going to have no choice but to send their kids to a public school despite all of the language about these bills being about parent choice.

Every day I would feel like I was forced to go to a part time prison and it took me decades to recover from the abuse. Student in Washington talking. My state has made steps that produced the effects of increasing funding for charter schools and cutting funding for low property income areas. The effects have been disastrous. Dozens of teachers have been laid off in our district. Average class sizes have ballooned from 20 to 30 people. Some teachers willingly quit to pursue other job fields. Citing job instability. It's bad

This is very much a top down movement, but it has appeal to some families, and those behind it freaking know it. Religious families wanting religion is schools is one thing, but another is the degree to which public schools do, in fact, suck. This coming from a public school teacher. Full inclusion, and non-discrimination are wonderful, and important things. The only issue being that our public schools themselves are already disenfranchised. There are not enough KINDS of schools (shoutout public alternative schools!) to adequately match the (correctly) high level of inclusion, And so, families see and hear these stories about students being left in the wrong environment. And those stories are real. We see it in mental health, violence, and mistreatment of students with exception needs, both those with disabilities, and gifted/talented students. So? What do these billionaires do? They construct this narrative that somehow??? Privatizing??? Education?? Will be the perfect solution, and make schools function "better" "again". And that shit actually hooks so many families. We need to stop the privatization of education, and keep it as a public utility. And then foster greater diversity of schools themselves through community effort. Organize schools, and funding such that class sizes and building sizes can be however small a giving community needs to meet the needs of their diverse learners. Make is so there actually always is a place for students to be. Even if we DID "Leave no child behind" we still need to PUT them somewhere right for them.

With these ideas being similsrly found in aspects of Project 2025, i find this maddening. Billionaire agendas aside, average people dissatified with the state of education being willing to defund public education are the same people who, when folks dissatified with the state of policing suggested we defund the police, thought the very idea was ludicrous. Occasionally, it isn't just that i disagree with what these people have been convinced they want, and more so that i hate their lack of ideological consistency

Like many conservatives seem to do, they play on fear. Parents fear that public schools are getting worse, so in the moment, they are inclined to the idea of putting their children in a private school for free with false expectation of a better experience.

I think vouchers emerged because of the frustration with public education. My issue is that I don’t think either side really understands the underlying issues. The first problem, why are we forcing high schoolers to be somewhere they don’t want to attend. My issue with the term teenager or summer vacations, we are coddling what are actually young adults. A 16 year old should not only have the right to not attend high school, but they should be compensated for performance and taught the reality of painful consequences early on, as in the taste and horror of failure while also teaching the ability to tackle that failure head on is key to being even remotely successful. Long run on sentence but I hope it makes sense. STOP CALLING 15 year olds KIDS.

I am confused, can someone clarify for me. Im confused by the language of "School Voucher" When I googled it, it sounded like a school voucher was essentially a set amount of money that a parent can request to use as a means to cover schooling costs. If that is the case, is the issue here that when the parent receives that money, that money can then be used for private schools instead, and resulting in that money not going towards the needs of a child in public schools? (I understand that even if this is the case, that boils down to tax dollars funding a private education) Or did I misunderstand that, because the way its being explained here sounds like set amount of money does not go to the parent, but instead goes to the school (For some reason?) Is it a funding that the School can apply for in preparation of accepting a student?

Might have been nice to get Sen Wayne in the vid. Im only about 2 30 in Dungan isnt a bad choice but from the top Im already worried about that aspect of the reporting. Theres definitely a buch of bad stuff going on with the money for privatization but it would have meant more coming from a Senator that was finally collapsed on it because the state hasn't been holding up equitable choices.
