The story of Jumia is quite inspiring. However it shows the complexities of doing business with questionable practices, operational inefficiencies and more importantly in a continent as volatile and diverse as Africa. One of their downfall is the slow delivery time. I ordered something from aliexpress from china. It came in less than 3 weeks, but Jumia can take up to 3 weeks. The same country delivery takes so long
@thaddnarrativeАй бұрын
Exactly! Operational Inefficiency was a major factor to their gradual decline
@JohnOdunayoАй бұрын
hmm, really? i've had really good delivery since i've been using it. Not just in Lagos too. I was in Kwara and always got my packages a day before they indicated it would come. I've been satisfied so far
@seige862129 күн бұрын
@JohnOdunayo I've been using them for 6 years. The delivery now takes time. I rather buy things on aliexpress than buy on jumia except it's very cheap which more than often it isn't

Can you do a video on Gokada? I think it would be interesting to see how they rebranded from a ride hailing company to a logistics one. Nice video btw. I think there's a potential for a part 2 that focuses on where the company is now

The problem with jumia was that it was dumping Chinese goods into Africa key market Nigeria then the Chinese moved into Africa cutting the middle man jumia out of the market. Also Pretend to African lies all they cared about was profit.

What then would be your advice to startups in a nutshell?
@thaddnarrative28 күн бұрын
Good question Chris. Startups should: * Prioritize hiring/employing solid hands who will run with the vision and mission of the startup. * Startups shouldn’t be in a haste to expand when they aren’t ready to. * Startups should prioritize quality operations within their organization and also with customers. *Startups should be smart with the kind of investors and partners they bring on board. *Startups should know when they need to carry out A&M (Acquiring and Merging). To mention but a few.

So first they refused to innovative, then they just tried to copy paste internationally successful players. Hired staff that don't qualify, and they didn't even make moves to train they're own staff. That seems like the main reasons for their downfall. They had a good thing but I feel they where in a hurry to grow big too fast. They're still big tho, but they could have been more.

The moment a tech startup go 100% manager mode this is what happens, especially the 3rd world . Innovation stops and everyone banks of popularity of the brand...MBA will be prioritized over entrepreneurial mindset... Jumai's business model was only waiting to stop at some point, 90%+ of good on the platform are not locally ma nufactured and over 50% of gadgets are shipped from abroad, giving an affiliate vibe of Aliexpress sales page.

How many proper businesses have your black CEOs built? You should blame your lack of proper regulation. This is a country where banks can take your money via criminal schemes and fake levies. Without any repercussions. What do you expect from other businesses?
