I’ve used no more nails along with the thin dowels. It’s worked a treat for me on the doors that I’ve repaired.
@TheEulerID2 жыл бұрын
One word of warning. If tapping a plug, dowel or anything else into a blind hole using a hammer in particle board, make absolutely sure that it's supported firmly on the opposite side or there is a significant danger of busting through and wrecking the laminate on the other side as there's often only a couple of millimetres of material. It's done properly here, but I can imagine some circumstances, such as using the same technique on the side of a cabinet, where this might not be the case and then you have to be very careful.

Excellent no-nonsense video that moves along at a good pace. I hadn't thought of using masonry wall plugs on laminate cupboards before but I had a few wooden dowels lying around. Fortunately they fitted perfectly into the worn screw-holes (after a bit of persuasion with a hammer) and the hinges on my kitchen cupboard now work perfectly. I've since taken your advice and bought a small pack of assorted masonry plugs so that I'm well prepared for any future loose hinges which don't have perfectly dowel-sized holes. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post this video.

Nice tips. if you don't have larger screws or anchors laying around you can also put a few toothpicks in the enlarged holes with a little glue, trim to length and just go right back in with your screw.....works for hinges on full size doors as well.

Much better solution than wall plugs. Hinges are subject to substantial movement and stress. Similarly 2 part filler is brittle when it sets and don't take too kindly to threads.

Great video. First and foremost: ALWAYS wear eye protection when drilling, using kives/razor blades, and using chemicals (like filler in this case). I suggest you drill pilot holes for the screws in the patch material. The pilot holes should be a little less than half the thickness of the screw shaft including the threads. This will prevent stress cracks in the patch from developing over time. I never use larger gauge screws to fix loose ones. I drill out the holes with a 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) drill bit (being careful not to drill through the door - tape around the drill bit can be used as a depth guage). Then on a piece of old scrap Oak wood, I drill out two 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) plugs (using special bits you can get at most hardware stores). Using Wood Glue, lightly tap the plugs into the holes you drilled, and cut flush using a rocking motion of the knife like shown with the plastic plugs. Then place the hinge on the door and mark the center point for each screw on the Oak plugs. Drill pilot holes (for the original screws) in the Oak plugs and reassemble. Oak is a very strong hardwood, so you MUST drill pilot holes or you WILL strip the screw heads (or even snap them off) trying to get the screw all the way down. ALWAYS drill pilot holes in wood unless you are doing decking/house framing where the woods used are usually softer woods. You will find that Oak (or any hardwood like Maple or Poplar) are far superior to particle wood (like that shown) or plastic plugs, and the screws will never come loose in the Oak as long as the doors/hinges are not abused.
@rodent2 жыл бұрын
I use matches, wood glue, trim the excess, and then the screws.
@paulromsky95272 жыл бұрын
@@rodent Yes, the matches/glue will work in a pinch... providing you use wooden match sticks and not the cardboard type. I have done that in the past, but they don't last/hold as long as the Oak Plug method. You can get plug maker drill bits in a 3 size pack for about $20. A great addition to any tool set.
@ut43212 жыл бұрын
This oak plug method sounds EXCELLENT, and gives me an excuse to buy the plug bits!
@paulromsky95272 жыл бұрын
@@ut4321 Yup, the "boss" now approves all purchases since the "Harley Incident of 2011". Don't forget to drill pilot holes in the Oak plugs for the screws or you WILL strip or tear off the screw head trying to screw it in - especially if you have a high torque screw driver/drill.

Hello Bill, you describe some plastic wall plugs that you called Masonry Plugs and you say everyone has them around the house. Well, I live in the USA, and I've never seen these plugs. They look very handy, but they are difficult to find here. In fact, I found them under "Hard to Find Items". Even Amazon doesn't seem to have them. All I find are wall anchors which are not the same.
