Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Hi!! In what context would you use "do you mind" ? Thanks for the great videos!

That is a great question! I have set up a Facebook group to provide assistance and feedback to individuals wishing to receive advice regarding ASL. If you haven't done so yet, you may wish to visit and apply to join: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ If you do wish to join please keep in mind that you will need to "read the rules" and answer a couple of questions during the application process. (If you don't answer the two questions the moderators tend to delete the application.) After you are a member of the Lifeprint-ASLU group feel free to post your ASL-related questions there after doing a search for the answer using the in-group search function (available on full-size browsers). You should receive some excellent answers. After a reasonable amount of time if you haven't received an answer from the group and if you still need my assistance feel free to tag me from within the thread. Warm regards, - Dr. Bill ___________________ William G. Vicars Ed.D. p.s. In regard to your question about "do you mind?" -- it is used for getting someone's permission to do something. It is almost always used politely (which is different from the variability of the spoken English usage). The ASL sign "do you mind" is actually more close to the English phrase "would you mind?" It can also be used as a form of "I don't mind / I don't care." (However there are other signs that can be used to mean don't care depending on the amount of politeness or lack thereof.) For more information see: ftp.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/d/dontmind.htm

so a couple of times here, paige does KIND with the circle above the other hand, instead of around it (for example, at 26:20). you always mention that you can do this for YEAR, but I've never seen you do it for the other signs with that motion, e.g. KIND, ALL, WORLD etc. is this a legit variation or is it just something she did as a non-native signer?

RoCeb -- what a great observation on your part. While I wouldn't go out of my way to teach the reduced movement versions of those signs to beginners (YEAR yes, the others not so much) I would not call those versions wrong. The sign "what-kind" -- I can certainly see that sign using the reduced movement. "World" would likely use the complete movement -- but, yah, you might see "world" done abbreviated. The sign "all" is indeed often abbreviated to a much more condensed movement.

How to sign Butter Scotch Ice cream? Could we use butter sign and fs scotch?
@sign-language
@sign-language 2 ай бұрын
Great question! The answer is: It depends! Concepts like butterscotch (one word) are rare enough that the Deaf Community hasn't developed a standard, widely-recognized sign. So for a one-off (one time) use, spell it out. As a transitory sign, for an extended conversation, after having introduced the concept via spelling it out, sure you might see some people sign BUTTER + (fs)-SCOTCH. I'd avoid claiming that is "THE" sign though. The official approach is to spell it.
