Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I am working with FEMA presently and on occassions have deaf/hard of hearing patients come in for their covid vaccination shots. Which I help with communicationvations, but I am struggling with certain medical questions I am required to ask. How do you sign for the following: Any Allergies? Are you Immunocompromised? Are you on blood thinner medications? Any help with these is greatly appreciated. While being more specific is best, if necessary at least a question that asks for "any health concerns" will do. My Thanks

If you use a desktop or laptop computer you can look up signs using this page: www.lifeprint.com/search.htm If you use a mobile device you can look up signs using this page: www.lifeprint.com/search/index.htm You should be able to find the individual signs below and then string them together. ANY ALLERGY? BLOOD THIN MEDICINE YOU? However, the term "Immunocompromised" is not common and doesn't have a specific sign. You can spell it out and then explain it by asking: (fingerspell DO) (then sign) YOU HAVE OTHER SERIOUS SICK? YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WEAK? Immune would be spelled. That should be enough for a simple survey question but if the person doesn't know what "immune" means then you would need to start giving examples and expanding. YOUR BODY CAN FIGHT SICK? Or give examples... EXAMPLE MAYBE CANCER, AIDS, fs-ORGAN TRANSPLANT, OTHER REASON? The fact though is that unless you are a skilled signer you probably won't be able to successfully communicate immunocompromised sufficiently to non-bilingual Deaf in a brief survey. So you might want to just go with YOU ANY HEALTH PROBLEM YOU? Again, you can look up most of those signs using a full size browser (not mobile) from here: www.lifeprint.com/search.htm

Hello Bill, I doubt you'll see this, but I've been watching your videos fro some time now, just trying to get enough ALS so I can communicate since I am a non-verbal autistic and it's hard for me to talk to people. Is there a sign to let them know that I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, that I simply am non-verbal?

+Baylee, Chewy & Vader Baylee, I reckon you could just sign: "I/ME CAN HEAR. NOT SPEAK." Sure, there are other phrases such as "I/ME CAN'T VOICE."

Question: Regarding the ASLU video titled “Medical Sign Language Lesson 01 (Part 2) (ASL)” hosted at KZbin, a student asks: “Can someone just help me with what he says first 20 seconds? Thank u” Response: For context it might help to view the last few seconds of "part 1" of this series. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaCmaHuvm9NpkKc There we see that the previous part of the conversation asked whether a member of the audience had been in an auto accident. Someone in the audience did respond that they had actually just recently been in an accident. At which point Dr. V relayed that information back to the classroom using depictive signing which caused a one of the students to at first laugh at the nature of the signing but who then felt guilty about laughing (about as serious of a situation as a car accident) and quickly changed their facial expression to one of concern. Dr. V. caught the student’s quick laugh-turned-to-concern reaction and role-played it back to the class. He then reassured the student (and the class) that their classmate wasn’t injured in the car accident (and Dr. V. looked over at the person who had been in the accident for confirmation that they were indeed not injured) In the first 20 or so seconds of “part 2” of the lesson (in the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bafJdoKjmqZmp6c ) we see one side of the second half of a multi-participant brief discussion regarding a car accident. Dr. Bill signing to a student: You laughed! Then gained control and acted sorrowful. Better! Off camera student: [signs something we can’t see] Dr. Bill: No, he (the person in the accident) is fine. He wasn’t, uh, mangled (in the car accident). Understand? I think the other person (in the accident) was fine too. What is, is. Your turn (Monica). Monica: This isn't a question. Dr. Bill: Fine. Tell them. [At which point the class went on with the lesson]

Dr. Bill, love your vids but the way women and men sign are different. ARRIVE. She was signing it like a woman and you were signing it like a guy. Unfortunately, we men are not taught this in ASL class so we wind up looking like effeminate males but then again most of us are gay so really....what was my pointj?
@sign-language
@sign-language 8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Lowery Heh. I discuss that topic ("gender differences in signing") as part of my "ASL Structure and Usage" class at the local university. (ASL Linguistics, etc.) For example, it is interesting how women tend to do the sign BASKETBALL higher than men sign it. I would imagine that your point "could" be: Students need to get out there in the real world and interact with a wide variety of signers.
@ruffdrive4u
@ruffdrive4u 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Vicars I am wondering if the sign BASKETBALL and the difference between the way the genders sign it is due to LOCATION of the sign either because 1) the height difference between genders or b) physical differences in wrist flexibility in signer's heights, etc. Then again, if you're going to a dunk shot or a dribble in ASL that would be notated by movement and location. You are right about signers getting out into the Deaf World. On a different topic, I have been teaching an ASL Class along with a few Deaf people. After I did it the first time and got some good input how to change it, I looked at your videos and how you kept everyone so riveted with your "acting" and "playing around" with the language. It was something that got me out of my comfort zone and as a result, the participants were motivated from week to week. Continue the good work, my friend!
