Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? While I was busy trying desperately to remember how to spell "mediterranean" Dr. Bill made it easy by just specifying hummus! I can't express how grateful I am for these lessons, I've wanted to learn ASL for years having worked in restaurants and having Deaf customers and feeling so bad for having to resort to writing to communicate or stressing that my lips weren't readable. Now I'm finally realizing that goal. I don't have the means to support your work as it stands now but I really hope I can in the future, just to say thanks. You are by all means a hero for what you do.

Hi. I’m glad to find u on this. I’m born deaf and mother didn’t know till school found out and she still doesn’t accept so I had to talk and lip read and have those cholears on and I lost my coristol and I cannot wear my aids anymore so your class helps me catch up and I noticed some signs changed. I need help so bad and now starting not to wear my aids no more. My voice causes problems. U teach the right way. Thank u. Keep going pls.

Hello, Dr. Vicars. While I am a hearing person, I have found a recent fascination for ASL. Your videos have been most helpful, and I very much enjoy your sense of humor and how you retain a light-hearted nature to your lessons. It makes them easier to learn for me, at least. I also wanted to say that in this lesson in particular, Katelyn missed out on a great opportunity to quote the Green Eggs & Ham book when you asked her if she liked green eggs & ham. I would have attempted to sign back, "I do not like them, Sam I. Am," to quote the book hahaha. Thank you for all your hard work in preparing these lessons and your teaching style that makes each lesson so enjoyable. -Daniel Rennie

I'm having a lot of trouble seeing Bill's thumb in this video. At 2:06 Bill fingerspells PINK LADY for the kind of apple that the student likes to eat. At 4:30 Bill fingerspells LUCKY CHARMS for the kind of cereal the student likes to eat, then signs "LUCKY" and fingerspells CHARMS. At 14:05 Bill signs NO, NEED PICK ONE, meaning that his students have been signing BOTH when he's asked them to choose their favorite from hamburger and hotdog, and he wants them to pick one to learn the sign for each food. At 20:50 Bill fingerspells TOMATO then signs TOMATO. At 23:57 Bill fingerspells ITALIAN WEDDING (which is a kind of soup). at 24:12 Bill signs (I assume) ITALIAN and then another variation of ITALIAN, then fingerspells WEDDING again and signs WEDDING.
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
At around 14:05 what I sign is: You must pick one! I suspect what was happening was the students all started telling me "both." While the sign "BOTH" is a great sign to know, I wanted them to practice signing either "hamburger" or "hotdog" so that at the end of the lesson they would have formed a memory of the signs HAMBURGER and HOTDOG. If they all just signed BOTH then when later during testing they might remember the sign BOTH but not remember how to sign HAMBURGER and/or HOTDOG. Again, it is fine (and encouraged) to know and learn the sign for BOTH -- but sometimes I have to make sure the students learn certain signs at certain times. Tip: Compare "FIND" versus "PICK" (one handed version). Tip: PICK has half a dozen versions. See: kzbin.info/door/Zy9xs6Tn9vWqN_5l0EEIZAsearch?query=pick You might need to use "desktop" mode for that particular link to list query results.

Great question! The sign where I tapped my cheek with my fingertips was an example of a very casual / relaxed form of the sign "know" as in "ya know?" In books the sign is shown on the forehead. In real life though the sign often makes contact much lower.

I think my record is 6 adult-sized dinner portions from a restaurant near my old house called "Asia cafe". Question for any students or parents... At deaf schools for kids in the USA, do they also have introductions, fun facts, icebreaker games etc. on the 1st day of class? I ask because in Korea they don't, but in America (mainstream schools) they do. I think it would be a good fun fact for me to introduce myself if I was still a student!

@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the name sign used to be a bit higher on the head as a "joke" sign regarding my bald head. It was given to me from Dr. Boley Seaborn -- a former classmate of mine in the doctoral Deaf Studies / Deaf Education program at Lamar University. (He passed away unexpectedly and relatively young back in 2006). Over time the name sign gravitated to the dominant temple area of the head. So, while I "do" like veggies -- they are not involved with my name

21:00 topic clam soup appears. Are you literally "speaking" soup or is chowder inferred? When talking about chowder, Manhatten vs NewEngland, would one FS both or use a sign? Thanx
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
If the person doing the signing is "bilingual" and/or does the shopping (and therefore sees the can) that person will likely know that "chowder" is intended by the sign "soup." Honestly? The wife (Bee) and I just spell "clam chowder" when conversing with each other. Those of us who are Deaf can spell clam faster than most folks can do a two-handed awkward clam-shell open/close/open movement. Then we just do cursive version of chowder that hits the CH mumbles the middle and hits a strong R at the end. Heh. If you think about it though, clam chowder is really just thick clam soup. As far as Manhattan style -- no freaking way we are spelling that out. In real life it tends to be: 1. clam soup white or 2. clam soup red (Or spelling of clam soup and adding red or white only if there are both options provided -- otherwise defaulting to white. Oh sure, you will get some folks who get all concerned about it and actually know how to spell Manhattan -- (but generally not out here on the West Coast).

You are not expected to catch all of the letters in-between -- rather you are encouraged to look for an overall shape and flow to the spelling and then fit it into the context of a type of cookie and then make a guess: O□□□□□□L.
