Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Thank you so much for this video! Sarah is probably my favorite student. Anyway, I was wondering if the Deaf community is altering the signs at all with this Corona virus stuff. Do you still try to not to touch your face while you sign??

My fear: long legged arthropods. Wasps, walking sticks, spiders, certain crustaceans like crabs and lobsters. They could be loving and absolutely harmless but I'll still be terrified 😂

Trying to learn it silently is a bit rough and I think it makes it ( to me hard to remember ) wish there were words while signing. I have heard and seen peeps using vocals with signs.

It really helps to do this before watching the video: go to the Lesson and look up all of the vocabulary words...click on them and look at Dr. Bill's web page on each word to learn the nuances. You can also slow down the speed of the video if you have trouble following certain parts.

Hey Mr. Bill! I have a lot of trouble trying to figure out what is being said when it’s off screen, do you think you could put closed captioning on your videos? It would be a lot easier to understand. Thanks!!

@Bill Vicars I've always wondered: could the sign for "cat" that uses the F hand shape be thought of as a form of initialization for the word "feline"? It seems to make sense to me, but I also realize that is most likely not the case and has more to do with the way anthropomorphic cats in cartoons are seen sprucing themselves up before a date or something like that :D (I obviously don't know the real reason haha). Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication, Dr. Vicars.

"Definition of Occam's razor : a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities" (Merriam-Webster dictionary) So I'm going to have to say that while it "could" be possible that the "F" in (one of the three main versions for the sign) cat is based on "feline" -- it just isn't likely. Cool coincidence though.

@@sign-language Yeah I didn't think so. I think some part of me just wanted there to be a correlation more than anything. Thanks again Dr. Vicars!

Then go ahead and form the correlation between the F, the word "feline" and the concept of a "cat." Just call it a memory aid -- not an etymology.

Sorry😬 I have another question😂... Let's say you're right handed and eating a sandwich with your right hand. In this circumstance, would you sign with your left hand?? Or would you eat with your left hand and sign with your right? I guess you could also just wait till you're done eating 😂
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
Well, I do like the "eating a sandwich" part of your question and it is hard to focus on the rest of the question beyond that but "most" skilled ASL signers (particularly those for whom signing is the "main" method of communicating on a daily basis) have no problem whatsoever signing with either hand. Why? Because we often "do" have something in one or the other of our hands. Let me give you a comparison. Do you "touch"-type with both hands on the keyboard? Do you have a problem using your non-dominant hand to do half of the typing? Of course not. You have practiced typing to the extent where it is natural with both hands. The same goes for Deaf signers.
