Never served in the forces but I'll never forget my lorry driver rugby coach who was about 5ft 9 and 25 stone. I was 17 and fit as a butchers dog, played for my town and Yorkshire One day I was gobbing off and he said if you carry on I'm chucking you in the biggest puddle I can find, so I did and then set off running at full tilt with a 20m head start, I ran for about 50 meters and he caught me. I was an outside centre and pretty quick. The way he caught up to me and grabbed me blew my mind, he ran like he was a winger not a fat bloke.

I’m in the Royal Navy and the first time I saw SAS when I was about 27, on an aircraft carrier, I thought there’d been a mistake. They looked like lost sports students. Like a bunch of lads who were just a Sunday football team who’d dressed up in fatigues and had odd looking rifles (later I discovered they were C8s). Their bosses were just codger looking guys, totally unassuming, and they blew our minds. Destroyed illusions and were total realists.

I love this about the SAS, and it's quite prevalent in some other non-US countries as well. You could see the most jolly dad figure at a mall with his children and later find out he was a Czech/Polish special forces all along. I like that, and it benefits these units' more covert nature. The US Seals or Deltas are mostly big, burly mean looking dudes with long hair and beards, and there's a purpose for that. They are the ultimate killing machines, and they use their strength wisely. It's just more appealing to me that that dad looking dude could have the same body count and you'd just never have guessed.

@@bobbobertbobberton1073 That's kind of exactly what I said? The "ultimate" mainly stems from the fact that hardly "per capita" you'd find SFs that are more fit. And there is plenty more to killing than just operating a weapon system, as I'm sure you know.

There's a story from a good number of years ago and whether it's true or not is debatable. This person was an average looking man, with a 9-5 job after the war, who used to regale people in his local pub with stories of what he had a hand in during the latter stages of WW2 and Korea etc, as he spoke about various military operations without saying what part he actually played in them. The regulars in his local pub all used to laugh at him, thinking he was telling tall tales, a sort of "war story and chips" type of thing. However their perception of him changed completely when he passed away and his family held a funeral for him and some of the people he knew from the pub attended his funeral too. It turned out that his funeral was a military one and their jaws dropped when a variety of very high ranking military officers and members of HM Government along with a number of top Whitehall civil servants attended his funeral. Turns out he was highly respected, and well known in the upper echeclons of Government as he had a major role behind the scenes. As they say, never judge a book by its cover.

Around 30-odd years ago, when we lived in Suffolk, I had a pal in the shooting club who was a registered firearms dealer and gunmaker, and apart from a large collection of hunting and big game rifles, he had a number of machine guns. He invited me to accompany him to the military ranges at Lydd, where he was going to spend the day demonstrating to British soldiers the type of foreign machine gun they might face in battle, and which they would need to know how to operate if they needed to use one they had picked up on the battlefield, having lost their own weapon. After the shooting was finished, some of the soldiers were picking up the brass, and I noticed a pair of unimpressive-looking soldiers. One was quite thin-looking, with longish, lank blond hair and a very pale, unhealthy-looking complexion. The other looked plumpish, with dark, very short hair. They were using their berets to hold the brass, and when they came over to add the brass to the pile, I saw that their berets were sand-coloured, with the winged dagger badge. Talk about not judging a book by its cover…

During selection for the ADSC they were probably a bit softer than joining later on, But they did not hold back. And hour PT session. The hall was baking hot. We were told to put our water bottles down and run. Got commands here and there, Sit ups, Pushups, run. After about 15 laps one lad ran over picked up his water bottle had a drink, PT leader running the show saw this but waited. next lap, 3 lads have seen oh that dudes drinking water, I think i'll do the same. All 4 kids were out there and then. I had never heard such a grilling. I saw the look on a few other lads faces which basically said "I don't want to be here, I shouldn't be here" Coming to the final interview i'm told the doc had noticed a small heart murmur, which is likely not a problem but they wanted it checked out. Turns out it was a problem, Not life threatening, but not something they wanted to have to deal with.

My dad's unit was on exercise - the fat bloke at the back told him he'd spotted a flash in the German woods. Dad (CSM) laid out a plan to circle waaaay around, and close in. They caught an SAS guy that had been in position for days. My dad said the SAS guy fought all of them, all the time, non-stop and it was a job in itself, for all of them to keep the guy 'prisoner'. Later some Lieutenant guy turned up and asked/ ordered for 'My man' to be released. That order was refused, until pops got word from his CO. My dad was fit as fuck (as was all our family), and he said he'd never met anyone with the strength - and the equipment - and the tenacity, of this guy. When they eventually handed him over, my dad said he'd either ruined some guys potential career, or they'd made someone the laughing stock of the SAS for a while. "SAS - My Story....caught by the fucking RAOC". Personal (naughty-boy) note: I still have ""Dieu est mon droit"" imprinted on my arse.
