Remember hearing this song originally, for the first time, on John Peel's show when I was a desparately unhappy, suicidal young man full self doubt, self loathing, confusion, longing and loneliness. It filled me with joy and excitement for just a little while. Now as an old man fairly stable and relatively happy it still fills me with the sort of joy only a young person should be able to claim rights to. What a song, WHAT A BLOODY MARVOLOUS SONG!

I’m probably about your age. I was living in the U.K. at that time and life under Thatcher was so tumultuous. Fortunately, I found a girl from the U.S. and have had a decent life until Trump has come along. Simple observations, simple song (but both quite complex if looked at closely).

I only ever listened to the kirsty macoll version (im 30 so was before my time). My dad always said about the original but I always dismissed it as it wasnt my kinda sound. Saw him on jules holland the other night… so raw and haunting!! Amazing

Kirsty MacColl wrote the middle verse, Billy wrote the song, she recorded it, thought it was too short, so added her verse, together they were utterly brilliant and he still is
@baggieboydan824 жыл бұрын
Actually billy wrote the verse for kirsty because like you said she thought it was too short. Billy agreed to do an additional verse

It’s not like there’s a policy saying white people only... race ties into culture. A lot of underground hip hop gigs will be majority black people etc
@succiboi36533 жыл бұрын
That’s like asking why a hidden rap concert has mostly brown faces at it, just cultural differences between races
