I came from the GDR and I am happy to listen to Billy Brag. He stands for the progressive part of mankind.

I had no idea this existed. Mid August 1986. East German tour of Berlin (x3), Halle, Dresden, Magdeburg and Leipzig with Newtown Neurotics and Attila The Stockbroker. Wish someone posted the other two acts' performance as well. And for all the hateful comments below, haters will be haters. They can spit poison as much as they want, but they won't take away love for this amazing artist. Billy Bragg forever!

@@brand_holt Their album was called "Neither Washington nor Moscow". No way would they have been allowed to play that in the G.D.R. ;) I happen to have been Jörg "George" Wolter´s (Billy´s, Attilas and the Neurotic´s guide/interpreter) assistant/understudy at some of those gigs.

What a true gem! Remembering Billy Bragg saying you can't punish the small man on the street just for living in a country with false politics, he has the right to hear good music like any other person in the world. Not many thought this way: Big Country, Cool and the gang..

What does it matter where he lives, unless you're telling me his a tax exile. Aren't Socialists allowed to own nice things? Which I think is what you're implying. He works hard for whatever he has in life, and much of that work is charitable fund raising for causes he believes in.

Played there 3 times iirc. Festival des Politischen Liedes in 1986 and 1989, Liedersommer der FDJ (plus tour through the GDR with the Newton Neurotics and Attila the Stockbroker) in 1986. Despite being a socialist he was rather critical of the SED dictatorship and the lack of freedom (of speech, travel etc.) in the GDR.
