Abercrombi, arguably one of the greatest of all time, was spot on when he played with Cobham. His prime!

What a drumfill on 0,36, Cobham is the monster on single strokes... I meet him at munich in ´75 after his performance during the Crosswinds tour... We talked about everythin´ on drums and drummer... I was very impressioned about his personality, no one critic about other drummers, such a nice and sympathic guy, and a real pro. This evening change my life too...

In 1 millisecond he evaluated what's left of the stick, considered it wouldn't do and replaced it with another stick. I couldn't even blink in that time. What a master.

@modir91 When I did see him during this period-he had a box of Promark 707 Ed Shaughnessy drumsticks opened on one end standing up beside him all unwrapped.He would snap one,reach down and grab another almost faster than the eye could see. At the end of the show-there were dead drum sticks all over the stage-think he went thru the whole box...

Notice that Abercrombie is playing Holdsworth's SG (at least, I assume it's Allan's and not John's). Soft Machine played this festival, and there are lots of vids of their set here on KZbin that show Holdsworth also using this guitar.

You're exactly right. That is indeed Holdsworth's SG. I recognize the emblems on each side of the front pickup.

Turns out that John borrowed the SG from Allan Holdsworth, as his own guitar was delayed in transit. Soft Machine with Holdsworth were on the bill that night too.

@ randyreal574 - yes Billy and the horn section as well as Abercrombie on guitar. Abercrombie played on the 1st record, but he did not tour with Dreams. He was replaced with Bob Mann, who played on the 2nd record when Will Lee (bass) also joined the band.

It mentions Glenn as playing trombone. Also, Abercrombie used the guitar when I saw the band in the US. So, they use the same guitar or Holdsworth borrowed Abercrombie's.

@jeremyjgray The problem is that when a rhythm section smokes like this one, you can play just about anything and get away with it. Still, it works better when you have a soloist as great as Mike Brecker floating over the top.

That doesn't matter that much. I found it a little arrogant and stupid to say that. Back in the days drummers still where inventive, nowadays they all copy what has been done in the past, and they all sound the same. Billy was a extremely original powerful drummer and still is.

@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out

the trombone.. the guitar wasn't real slick either if i recall. sort of twangy fusion wants to sound rock-ish and avant garde, in a McLaughlin direction. trying to play "outside" funk that's simply lost its touch with musicality. there's a way to play out on these one and two chord minor funk things that some guys can do, like corea and jarrett and liebman with miles, but this just aint hittin it.. then again, the sound quality is such shit; it probably was pretty cool live, if you were 19 and baked. i saw the Jazz Warriors at SJSU for 5$ with Ndugu and a guitarist back in '79 or '80, ( i was young and definitely baked) similar, but way more "inside" harmonically, great show.
