@@MrBooklearn I thought I was the only one who holds machina to the same regard as Siamese Gish Mellon...with GATGC, Blue Skies, This Time, Stand Inside, I of, um...hello, WITH EVERY LIGHT!? It is definitely less magical and fantastic than Mellon Collie was but it would have gotten so old to stay in that "aesthetic," and so what machina did was keep the quality but seriously matured in theme and because of that, it did in sound and as I was years and years older, I needed that maturing along with me or it would have seemed like a marketing scheme to me to stick with the old and I would have lost respect. So it was a perfect transition and it was awesome.

I always felt that billy corgan got more crap than he deserved for how he treated the band. Its clear, that while the other members of the band were definitely committed members and talented in their own respects, Billy was the one who would live and breathe music, who would spend every waking hour working on the music. And yet he still got so much flak for being this "tyrant" when the reality is in many bands, this system is the norm.

I agree. I just listened to 'monunemts' again for the 1st time in ages. Really dig this on James' input. Iha's melodic gloss was utterly gone after Mellon Collie. Machina the album ties Billy's electro-goth incursions from Adore to his heavy metal and rock sensibilities. It was fantastic, and the last genuinely great project Corgan put out. One however missed the warmth of Iha's lyricism to balance out the Corgan megalomania. That was sooo cool around the 14:00 minute mark, that Billy is describing the staying power and timelessness of certain bands. His analysis of Metallica after seeing them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago was right on and shocked me because I can totally relate and remember feeling the same way at that same time. Seeing Metallica was an eye opener for him. (Billy is around my age and we both grew up in the same area, the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, I understand the music scene and the social dynamics of where he was living in the 1980's. In fact, when Billy was staying with his Grandmother, he was friends with a friend of mine and he would jam in my buddy's basement with a couple of friends of mine who were two years older, which seemed more older when yer a teen. They listened to Deep Purple, Rainbow, UFO, Michael Schenker, AC/DC, Ted Nugent) Metallica was relaying that "there's this other world that was more closely aligned with the experience you're having than the one our being told about." "The energy that was in the Aragon Ballroom that night was nothing like anything that I'd ever seen then or since." "You guys looked the fuckin kids I went to school with. These people understand the world I'm in, which is nowhere fucking land. So it wasn't like 'cool' these guys are the hot new band. These guys fuckin understand. Thank God somebody fuckin gets it." I totally get what he was saying and I can remember being 15 and realizing they were the real deal and had the potential for staying power, like the classic rock bands like the Zeppelin or the Who. They weren't a flash in the pan and could last. Metallica was unique and ushering in a new style/form of Metal or Rock in general. They made the current Metal bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest look old overnight, much like what Nirvana would do in 1991 and make the current Hair Metal bands of Pop Rock irrelevant and obsolete. Damn, thats so cool to hear his analysis of Metallica and how Lars feels complimented and "feels goosebumps" from hearing him explain this. Great interview and conversation with how music had its effect on them both as kids.

That was a good interview. I truly enjoyed hearing Lars talking to Billy. Lars is a good interviewer, asks interesting technical questions that aren’t just generic and contrite. I am EXCITED for the Pumpkins show this summer! I’m even more excited that there’ll be more music than Solara!! Woo woo!!!

Wow, I am blown away at how good of an interviewer Lars is! He obviously did his homework but most importantly, he LISTENS and leaves plenty of room for the interviewee to SPEAK!!! So many interviewers get that terribly wrong.

that's crazy to me, i never would've thought so, but it sure is rad to know how highly he regards them. hard road is my favorite sabbath song and it took me so long to realize the influence

Incredible interview, Lars. Thank you.

Far too short. It's great to listen to two peers have a conversation, as opposed to an interview where Billy or Lars is on guard.
