I think is because a big part of the guys he interviews idolize him or Metallica, anyone who plays heavy or rock music in these days have to pay credit to them, even if its only in a showbiz perspective.

I absolutely love how Lars doesn't ask the usual questions. He gets to the core. I also like how he asks the "mechanical" questions. Like..."do you go write in a room, is there a particular cup of tea?". These are questions i want to know.

Kyle Crouch Well said, Lars has an absurd amount of raw talent as a podcaster/interviewer, and gets the questions us true, hardcore music fans want to know; the side stories, the nostalgia and reflection. Just two true, proven and timeless musicians talking heavy music.

I appreciate that fact that two musicians/artists who have performed at the highest levels can sit back and reflect on their experiences, but don’t act like they have everything figured out. The both seem genuinely interested in what each other have to say, and not simply waiting for their turn to talk or steer the narrative...

I just saw the Pumpkins during the Oh So Bright tour, They were fantastic, and never sounded better. I think Billy Corgan is one of the greatest writer/song writers of our time, period. Right up there with Prince. His writing is like Poetry, he can also play many instruments. He's also one of the most underrated guitar players. His type of talent doesn't come around often. Maybe once every 40 years.

@@MrBooklearn I thought I was the only one who holds machina to the same regard as Siamese Gish Mellon...with GATGC, Blue Skies, This Time, Stand Inside, I of, um...hello, WITH EVERY LIGHT!? It is definitely less magical and fantastic than Mellon Collie was but it would have gotten so old to stay in that "aesthetic," and so what machina did was keep the quality but seriously matured in theme and because of that, it did in sound and as I was years and years older, I needed that maturing along with me or it would have seemed like a marketing scheme to me to stick with the old and I would have lost respect. So it was a perfect transition and it was awesome.

It's surprisingly and strangely tough to find people who just listen to whatever they think is great. Especially young people. I like how Lars says his son listens to whatever, but I think he's a rare case. I can't find many people outside the internet that listen to whatever they think is great. People box themselves for a bizarre reason.

marvinshenk - it's true, all genres are good but the Eighties still ruined a lot of good music with excess reverb, keyboards and really harsh-sounding mixes. Over-treated album production with no soul. And I'm a fan of Def Leppard Pyromania and some Cars albums, so gimmicky production doesn't have to suck, it can be cool.

I always felt that billy corgan got more crap than he deserved for how he treated the band. Its clear, that while the other members of the band were definitely committed members and talented in their own respects, Billy was the one who would live and breathe music, who would spend every waking hour working on the music. And yet he still got so much flak for being this "tyrant" when the reality is in many bands, this system is the norm.

I agree. I just listened to 'monunemts' again for the 1st time in ages. You're right, but honestly after a few listens to anything without Jimmy and Iha - The Pumpkins really isn't The Pumpkins without that drum groove and guitar feel/tone. I'm really hoping Solara just nails it - alike a Bitter sweet french kiss on a cold night by a black jaguar while floating in space.

Really dig this on James' input. Iha's melodic gloss was utterly gone after Mellon Collie. Machina the album ties Billy's electro-goth incursions from Adore to his heavy metal and rock sensibilities. It was fantastic, and the last genuinely great project Corgan put out. One however missed the warmth of Iha's lyricism to balance out the Corgan megalomania. The Pumpkins without Iha make no sense to me.

That was sooo cool around the 14:00 minute mark, that Billy is describing the staying power and timelessness of certain bands. His analysis of Metallica after seeing them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago was right on and shocked me because I can totally relate and remember feeling the same way at that same time. Seeing Metallica was an eye opener for him. (Billy is around my age and we both grew up in the same area, the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, I understand the music scene and the social dynamics of where he was living in the 1980's. In fact, when Billy was staying with his Grandmother, he was friends with a friend of mine and he would jam in my buddy's basement with a couple of friends of mine who were two years older, which seemed more older when yer a teen. They listened to Deep Purple, Rainbow, UFO, Michael Schenker, AC/DC, Ted Nugent) Metallica was relaying that "there's this other world that was more closely aligned with the experience you're having than the one our being told about." "The energy that was in the Aragon Ballroom that night was nothing like anything that I'd ever seen then or since." "You guys looked the fuckin kids I went to school with. These people understand the world I'm in, which is nowhere fucking land. So it wasn't like 'cool' these guys are the hot new band. These guys fuckin understand. Thank God somebody fuckin gets it." I totally get what he was saying and I can remember being 15 and realizing they were the real deal and had the potential for staying power, like the classic rock bands like the Zeppelin or the Who. They weren't a flash in the pan and could last. Metallica was unique and ushering in a new style/form of Metal or Rock in general. They made the current Metal bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest look old overnight, much like what Nirvana would do in 1991 and make the current Hair Metal bands of Pop Rock irrelevant and obsolete. Damn, thats so cool to hear his analysis of Metallica and how Lars feels complimented and "feels goosebumps" from hearing him explain this. Great interview and conversation with how music had its effect on them both as kids.

Howard is the biggest sellout. Howard sold out when he “X’ed” out his fans. The fans that would call in to ask Billy questions.

Adam It’s definitely easier for Lars to have a better conversation since he’s clearly someone Billy looks up to in a way and has a better way relating to his situation

Beginning: ah weird, I've never heard Lars talk before. Ha, his voice is funny. A few minutes in: Damn, this is actually great. Lars is oddly really good as an interviewer.

All we need is D'arcy back! Prolly won't happen but that would technically be a reincarnation of the band. Obviously the pumpkins aren't over yet and still have their talent, they can keep going forever until their final days if they honestly want to. Very intelligent and talented musicians in this band. That's what makes them one of the best
