Few remember this was the year of the JFK movie, one of the best movies ever. It had both artistic and historical significance. Instead, they gave the Oscar to a movie about a deranged human with cannibalistic instincts. This was the year the Academy lost a huge chunk of credibility.

Hannibal Lecter has been ranked as the most intimidating villain of all time. I agree that The Silence of the Lambs is a masterpiece, and I bet if the role of Hannibal Lecter was casted differently, it may not be the masterpiece that it is. Hopkins was BRILLIANT as Dr. Lecter.

Anthony Hopkins could stand and read the phone book on stage and his work is still head and shoulders above the majority of his acting peers. His performance as Lecter is indellible and his acting in Merchant's "Remains Of The Day", "Howard's End" " Nixon" and many others is superb. I look forward to seeing his portrayal of Hitchcock.

Jodie Foster won best actress and she deserved it as well. The idea that Kathy Bates handed Anthony Hopkins the oscar was epic and Kathy Bates is so classy and she won for Misery.

Silence of the Lambs was such a huge film in it's day, it made a ton of money and got nominated for lots of awards and I think it swept the big ones, Best Pic, director, lead male and female. Such a clever and unexpected way to open. Kudos to Crystal and his writing team, people were laughing in the audience before he said a word, all they had to do was roll him on stage with that mask and the laughs started. Brilliant and simple.
