FILM DESCRIPTION:
The life of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, a coal miner's son in Northern England, is forever changed one day when he stumbles upon a ballet class during his weekly boxing lesson. Before long, he finds himself in dance, demonstrating the kind of raw talent seldom seen by the class' exacting instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson. With a tart tongue and a never-ending stream of cigarettes in her hand, Mrs. Wilkinson's zest for teaching is revived when she sees Billy's potential.

As someone who has gone to ballet class for about 17 years, 13 of them in the 60s and 70s, I have to say that I am yet to see a class full of tutu wearing girls, or a teacher chain smoking during class and apparently not minding that not one girl has a decent turnout, or pointed foot... And when she dances with Billy, oh boy, that woman is a wonderful actress, but most certainly and obviously not a trained ballet dancer ! Still, that movie is amazing, and I do love it.

Well they’re only kids. Got time to develop turnout and technique. Also, not everyone who pursues ballet as a hobby is naturally flexible.

It's also Gym Class (of a sort), isn't it? I also don't think the UK had issues with cigarettes like the USA till much much later.

@@InaEsin I have spent a good amount of time in ballet class, and I have never ever thought of it as "gym class"? The very idea of calling ballet class "gym class" would probably be enough to give most ballet teachers an immediate stroke ! Besides, ballet or gym, a teacher chain-smoking through it is not exactly ideal ! And considering the time frame of the movie (1984), I think that the UK was already well aware of the risks of smoking, especially in a roomfull of children.
