I love that honorees aren't told who'll be performing their songs. Check out Carole King going fangirl-crazy and I'm-not-worthy when Aretha Franklin came onstage and sang Natural Woman - and Paul McCartney's reaction to James Taylor's walking out! (For anyone not aware of this) JT got his big break when he moved to London. In 1968, Peter Asher listened to a demo tape of his, then gave it to Paul, and George Harrison. They became major fans and supporters, helping him get signed to Apple Records. They both perform on Carolina in My Mind. -- Sorry, I went pretty far OT there! Anyway, it seems that even music idols have music idols.

They way they presented the Piano Bar story isn't exactly accurate. Billy Joel wasn't a starving piano bar player struggling to make it. He had actually already been signed to a record deal, but the deal was so bad that he refused to release any music under the label. So he took a job at a piano bar while he waited out his contract. As soon as he was released from the contract, he started releasing his creations under a new label and the rest is history.

But, I'm sure I'm not wrong if I say that we were so fortunate to share our lifetimes with the contemporary songwriters who had their heyday in the 1960s and 1970s (and beyond, in some cases). A golden era that we're at the tail-end of, alas. Music will always be among the most potent forces on earth and I salute all the masters of the craft: from those who came before me to those who I'll never have the privilege to hear. (tips my hat)

@bherber6 жыл бұрын
@DroneLife RC - Garth should have done You May Be Right... That would have been a great strong tune to do. This whole thing seemed like it was trying to be too politically correct, and it got too soft and sucked as a result. That would have been great if Garth had done that tune. Look at the two he had done - Good Saigon about Vietnam vets & Allentown about unemployed steelworkers which are politically correct, but the actual music for both tunes are kind of drab. The only strong tune covered during the entire thing (Big Shot), was ruined by a cakey, musical, Broadway guy. Tony Bennett's intro was good, but the covers were awful. This was a cake fest, and Billy deserves better.
