Billy writes all of his songs.

Yeah, about 95% of the time. In concert, and very very occasionally on his Greatest Hits albums, he'll do covers of other peoples' songs. But he's a singer-songwriter through and through, and he writes his own material.

Every album Billy released was written, composed AND performed By Billy Joel. he has few peers. Fun Fact: Billy made sure there was "bleed over" from his piano to his voice microphone, so nobody could accuse him of multitracking! LEGEND!

Funny this song will always remind me of the day Chris Evert retired in September 1989 ( I know the song is from before). They did a short NBC did a short tribute to her, with this song as the background music. I will never forget it..

Billy was originally planning on being a musical composer and writer. He never wanted to be on stage singing. He just wanted to write songs for others to sing. Eventually, with a lot of encouragement, he made his way to the stage. The rest as you say is history. Definitely check out the documentaries about his life. He was married to Christie Brinkley. They brought music to the Soviet Union before the iron curtain came down. They still love him over there for the time he spent there.

Billy Joel is an AMAZING singer, song-writer and musician. And yeah, I agree that he really shows how good he is in comparatively "Simple" songs like this where like you said, it's just him, a microphone and a piano. Another great song of his along those lines (and my personal favorite love song of his) is "And So It Goes". Please check it out! If you love love songs, I think one of the best out there is " Time in a Bottle " by the late Jim Croce. He was another story teller in his songs . Had lots of great hits before he was taken in a plane crash.

He was indeed married to Christie Brinkley; however, this song has nothing to do with her. Billy had not even met Christy at the time this song was written (1971), this song is actually about his first wife; Elizabeth Weber Small, and was written before they got married in 1973.
