Billy Joel is to Long Island as Bruce Springsteen is to New Jersey. His work has spanned decades, and is influenced by everything from jazz to '50s doo wop to gospel. He's covered serious subjects like Vietnam ("Goodnight Saigon"), unhealthy relationships ("Laura," "The Stranger"), blue collar economic woes ("Allentown," "The Downeaster Alexa"), modern day anxiety ("Pressure," "Captain Jack"), etc. He's also released some of the greatest love songs ever written, like "Tell Her About It," "She's Always a Woman," and "The Longest Time." Definitely worth a deep dive.

No matter where I was in the World, whenever I heard this song, it reminded me of her. We had no contact since the mid 80s. About 20 years go, I was walking into my local supermarket and this song was playing. I smiled instantly and thought of her. Finished my shopping and went home. I heard that he was walking in New York with one of his teenage kids and humming the tune to a song he was working on and the kid got embarrassed. He told them to understand that a lot of people pay him to make those sounds in public. Kids. Good reaction. They aren't all mellow listening, just enough of them.

It always stuns me when people don't know Billy Joel and his music; of course it's inevitable his career soared in the 70s and that was half a century ago but he wrote all his music and everything he does is literally a masterpiece of songwriting. He is a true wordsmith. And this song is one of the most romantic songs ever written. He was nominated for 23 Grammys and won 6; he wrote 33 top 40 hits including three number ones. Just listen to anything at all and you're going to be amazed and delighted. He is a deep man and the songs he writes are deep. And unique -- no one else sounds like him in any sense.

The saxophonist is Mark Rivera, he has been in the band since 1981 at least. Yes it was in the original song, Billy uses saxophone nearly as much as piano. He has had two brilliant sax players since 1975 Richie Canata and Mark Rivera.
@pabloivanreyes79636 ай бұрын
I would only add that the saxophonist that actually recorded the album solo (which Canata and Rivera would conceptually draw their inspiration from in live concerts) was Phil Woods, one of the top jazz session players (alto sax) in NYC at the time. That Woods' sax solo helped elevate the song "Just the Way You Are" and the album, The Stranger (1977), to two Grammy Awards (Song of the Year, and Record of the Year) in1978. Ironically, Joel originally did not want to include it on The Stranger because he did not want to be branded a "wedding singer"... but on an evening visit to the studio by Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow, while Joel and Phil Ramone (producer/engineer) were still mixing, Joel played them the song, and told them that he probably would not include it on the album. After hearing the song, and of Joel's intentions, Ronstadt & Snow were emphatic about including the song, saying 'Are you crazy? That's the hit. You're out of your minds if you don't put it on the album.' Well, Joel and Ramone listened to them, "and the rest is history!" Besides "Piano Man," "Just the Way You Are" is Joel's most requested song.

I grew up listening to Billy Joel. I have heard this song a million times. I have the "The Stranger" song book and used to play and sing this song when I was young (and single). Listening to it just now, I have tears in my eyes, because I love my wife more now than I did when we married 35 years ago, and this song captures that perfectly. Britt, I wish the same for you and your husband.

First, I love watching your reactions. You are so adorable and real. Second, I grew up listening to Billy Joel. He is from Long Island, NY. When he sings about the "village green" (another song), my friends and I all knew it was about the West Village Green (where we lived) in Hicksville, Long Island. The village greens were strips of stores with a playground and pool behind them. There was a store on one end where my friends and I spent time picking out candy, but there was a bar on the other end where Billy hung out as a teen. I was too young to go to the bar, but I remember seeing the guys hanging around outside of it all the time. As we got older, we would often wonder if Billy was one of the guys we saw hanging out there. lol

Great reaction! You're gonna love Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. One of his longer songs, but truly amazing and you won't want it to end.

Billy Joel is an American treasure. I don't listen to him much anymore, but I was a huge fan back in the 70s & early 80s. He just became too popular, but I do understand the appeal.

He also played piano when he was 16 years old for the Shangri-las song "leader of the pack" and a few other songs.

I listened to this song a LOT way back when. ♥ It was huge on the radio back in late 70's, I was married in 1978, so I really loved this song. Joel has so many great songs.

A song I think you should hear to really appreciate his voice, and his GREAT writing is "An innocent man" from the album " of the same name!!! His voice is SO GOOD, and the lyrics are heartwarming, to say the least!!! It is my favorite song of his, although he has more than a dozen I absolutely love!!! Give it a listen and you won't be sorry!!!
