This reminds me of my memory with Message in a Bottle by The Police. My dad died in 2016 during Christmas time, 8 days after my Birthday. Even though it's my favorite time of the year, It's always hard in that aspect. My Dad and my uncle look very similar (as some brothers do lol) and Christmas 2022 rolls around. There were 2 musicians that my dad especially liked. U2 and The Police. So when they gave my uncle a record player to play all the Albums in the attic, quite a few of my dad's as he left some of his belongings when coming to the U.S. so when they brought out The Police's album "Reggatta de Blanc" and played Message in the Bottle I couldn't help but go to another room and cry, it was happy crying though.

I woke up with this song on my head. I hadnt heard it in over a decade. Did you ever find what you had lost on the other side? Great song mechanically. Great intro with the warm vibration in the back. Great backup singers, warm smooth harmonies. Easy and catchy chorus. Fun beat with meaningful lyrics. Artists dont make many masterpieces. I think you nailed it on this one.

In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep From the mountains of faith To a river so deep I must be looking for something Something sacred I lost But the river is wide And it's too hard to cross And even though I know the river is wide I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore And try to cross to the opposite side So I can finally find out what I've been looking for In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the valley of fear To a river so deep And I've been searching for something Taken out of my soul Something I would never lose Something somebody stole I don't know why I go walking at night But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life Until I find what it is that I've been looking for In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the jungle of doubt To a river so deep I know I'm searching for something Something so undefined That it can only be seen By the eyes of the blind In the middle of the night I'm not sure about a life after this God knows I've never been a spiritual man Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river That runs to the promised land In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the desert of truth To the river so deep We all end in the ocean We all start in the streams We're all carried along By the river of dreams In the middle of the night

I discovered Billy Joel’s genius when I was 11 in 1977. The two songs that crystallized in my mind as life affirming were Anthony’s Song (Movin’ Out) and My Life. These masterfully written, performed and produced songs led me to other songs like Just The Way You Are, Don’t Ask Me Why, It’s Still Rock-n-Roll To Me, all the way to the iconic An Innocent Man album. Billy Joel sang about pretty much everything in the human condition. The song Second Wind was an anti suicide song. The song Why Should I Worry was inspired. I was surprised when Billy Joel stated in an interview that the song Uptown Girl was written as an orchestral piece. I would love to hear and orchestra play Uptown Girl. Who knows? Maybe Billy Joel might compose orchestral pieces someday.

It was in beginning of June 1994. I was driving on Interstate 89N, just passing West Hartford heading to Barre, Vermont. It was already after midnight and I had realised nobody in the USA was speeding like in Sweden (25% över the limit). Consqenly I was far behind my schedule and becoming dangerously tired. Then River of Dreams came on the radio. The song was like an energy drink, I became alert again and reached Barre safe and sound. Weeks later a music shop in Santa Barbara, CA, helped me to find out song and artist and got me a music cassette with the album.

I woke up thinking of this song, feeling a little sarcastic about waking up so early. Then I saw the lyrics, when I watched this video. I offer another perspective. My wife died last year, and I have felt so lost since then, so when I really paid attention to the lyrics, it was exactly perfect for where I find myself in life, except I would say I've always been a spiritual man. Otherwise - yup. Looking for where I belong, because losing my wife stole something sacred from me.

Whenever someone says "in the middle of the night", my mind immediately starts singing this song. The way he says "we're all carried along" at 2:54 is transcending.

Mike Delguidice, a recent addition to Billy's band, and member of the tribute band Big Shot, came to my high school and performed this just last week. He played this song, and since us kids in the music department had previously sung it for chorus class, we did the backup vocals. It was incredible :D

when i was fourth grade everyone hated me for listening to Billy Joel. Why? because he was from what everyone expected the 1920's. i even told them he was from around the 1980's

tonight, i had a concert, and we sang this song. it was so beautiful. i was actually one of the soloists that sang the ooh’s at 2:09. and it was such an experience i can’t even explain it. hearing the rest of the choir sing the lyrics and we sing a different part on top of it sounds so beautiful. it was my favorite part of the song. i felt almost like the main character while singing it. there aren’t even words that i can say to describe how it made me feel. it was such a good time. definitely a core memory i will never forget

I first heard this on his live new year's eve album and felt my heart rise in praise (even though the only gospel thing about it is the backup singer's voices). I can't imagine what's wrong with my old man--he hates this song. This man can bang those 88s! Somewhere I read the question: who's the better piano player, Billy or Elton John? Mr. Joel graciously said everyone knows Elton's the better man but I love you both. Standouts in your own right. Thanks for the music.
