I remember waking up to this song one morning in the early 90's. I woke up just a few moments before 6am when the radio alarm clicked on and started playing this song. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like God had created that morning just for me. I'll don't think I'll ever forget that morning.

This is creepy. When I was very small, probably around 4, I woke up very early, walked out of my room and into the living room. It was dark. This music video was playing on the television and I have never forgotten that moment. I don't even know why it was so moving and impactful, but it was. It's been on my playlists since I have been able to download music.

My grandmother died three weeks ago and I chose to play this at her funeral because she used to dance with my brother and cousins and I to this song. I asked permission to organise her funeral because she was my best friend, confidant, and I simply just adored her. She loved this song. As the only Granddaughter, I felt it was my duty to organise a celebration of her life. I couldn't cope with my dad and his brother trying to organise a ceremony for her by themselves and didn't want them to choose the outfit she wore in her coffin. I chose a watermelon pink dress I knew she'd adore. She looked so beautiful and at peace. I spoke a eulogy and then my Dad did then I chose this song to pause and reflect on her views. I cried my eyes out because I knew she would like an upbeat song at her celebration. My Dad held my hand and told me I had made the most beautiful celebration of his mother's life he could ever imagine. There are a lot of reasons why I chose this song, and maybe some family members didn't love it, but it was true to her spirit. I hope she loved it. Thank you, Billy.

Although the video looks like it was filmed in the south it was actually shot on the Connecticut River. The bridge is the Providence & Worcester railroad bridge in Middletown Ct. Billy Joel was very familiar with the area & chose the locations himself. That's him shown in the little outboard on the river.
@jamesholden45712 күн бұрын
There is a shot of the ferry slip for the South Glastonbury/Rocky Hill ferry across the Connecticut River two towns North of the Middletown bridge. I grew up in South Glastonbury, and my school bus used to pass the ferry road every day. Billy was HUGE in Glastonbury when I was in high school. I got to see him 5 times in concert. A friend of mine sang "I've Loved These Days" at the 1984 Glastonbury High School graduation.

I’m sorry for your loss. My dad passed two years + four months ago. He was a musician, so… the music at the funeral had to be just right. It was one of the last things we could do for him. A couple of his oldest friends in the music business played at the funeral which honestly blew me away. I’m not sure I would have been able to do that! But we were so grateful and it was exactly what he would have wanted. You might still want to cry years down the road when you hear this song - that’s sort of how it’s gone for me. But ultimately it’s for a good reason. Music is medicine for the soul❤️

I’ve been a fan of Billy Joel for years, but seeing this video was a reminder of how unfair life is. Specifically, it is not fair that a single individual should be endowed with such remarkable songwriting and musical performance talents. He has produced so much great music that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of it all. Seeing this video reminded me of his creative use of a “gospel-like” backing choir in this terrific song. My thanks to whoever posted the video…and all good wishes to Billy. He is in the Pantheon with great American songwriters like Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin. He is a national treasure.

I had the pleasure of seeing him in 2021 in Cincinnati. He had such a way of talking and joking with the audience. A fair majority of the songs he took a poll on which between two songs we wanted to hear. I got to hear him play a majority of my faves, including this one. 💛

I remember hearing this as a kid, maybe 11 years old then, (it played on the radio in Costa Rica) and being so captivated by the sounds and the soul within it, starting with the percussion track. Only thing was, I could not understand a lick of English then! Fast Forward 10 years and I was in the US, when I heard it by chance on the radio again, I was now able to understand most of the song. Making sense of its lyrics I was able to understand what it said and why it was so touching to me. It felt as if somehow I already knew what it meant, musically speaking. But the lyrics only added more depth to the great emotion and soul of this great song. It always gets me right in the heart.

How anyone can dislike this song is honestly beyond me. It's spiritual, has superb music, Billy Joel sings like he's singing for his life, the lyrics are excellent, he sings it with such conviction that you believe he means every word. I've only just recently found this song and I can say it's one of my favourite songs of all time already.
@alt43883 жыл бұрын
Because some people don't like spiritual music.
@gaiagreen26903 жыл бұрын
Actually, I don't think that it is the music itself but the atmosphere and the images in the video that people dislike. They very likely associate the song with a specific geography and a way of life, and those are in turn associated with negative things that have been happening during these last few years. I have witnessed this reaction twice, where people said that the song in itself is beautiful, but that the images remind them of certain things they are confronted with daily, tired of and wish to avoid. This is how human brain works - even though the sound is superb and uplifting, to those whose subconsciousness finds the images disturbing, it will cause an emotional reaction of uneasiness and overpower the positivity. It is called association, it is emotional rather than rational and it is NOT wilful. Sometimes, everyday's negativity creeps in and spoils most beautiful things.

@@0311Mushroom no that's not why, even in the album it says that these are his final words. he's writing, but they're instrumental classical styles. He says that his songs are like his kids when he hears them on the radio and he roots for them. This is often played, but he's got many standards over the years.

@mrdandrea2 жыл бұрын
@@pistachiosandpopcorn7146It is smooth number, a natural beat. It's hard for me to pick a favorite. Depends on the mood. I think over the years, "Just the Way You Are" has had the most air time played on the radio, along with "Piano Man" and of course his #1 still rock-n-roll was a huge smash at the time, ironically without piano accompany. Yet, there's so many more. Stinking good talent.

This is perhaps the greatest song of the 90's. It will be a sad day in the music industry when The Piano Man retires. An entire generation is going to grow up NOT knowing Billy Joel, and that breaks my heart. I have seen Billy 15 times in 20 years. My first concert was in Shea Stadium, and my last concert was The Last Play at Shea Stadium. Full circle. Pardon me while I go cry.
