I only found this a year after you put it up, but I'm pretty sure Billy Joel's from Long Island. Played keyboard in a LI rock band in the 60's called The Hassels, who I saw play at an all-ages show in my hometown upstate when I was about 16.

When he recorded this he told the producer he wanted to add a line on top of the piano and he whisled that line. He said just leave it like that its perfect and he did.

He's from The Bronx. Born there, and grew up on Long Island; Hicksville, I think. If you haven't checked it out yet, please give a listen to Scenes from an Italian Restaurant - - a live version. If you like his style on this song, you'll probably like that too. And his piano work on it is insane!! Many of Billy's deep cuts and b-sides are borderline masterpieces, and a couple of them are truly masterpieces. Another song of his that you might find interesting is Goodnight Saigon (for this, I recommend the Old Grey Whistle Stop live performance. p.s. Billy Joel and Elton John have toured together, I think a few times. But back in the Nineties they did a legendary tour together.

Billy Joel is one of the best singer/songwriters of all time. Add to that his piano playing and ability to hold and capture an audience. He is a GOAT. Such a deep rabbit-hole to go down, but well worth it. Check out Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, River of Dreams and Pressure. He will not disappoint. Great reaction.

Billy Joel is fabulous. He's from the Bronx. "Piano Man" is one of my favorites and well worth a listen, although Joel wrote so much great music, it's difficult to choose. Shouldn't be worried about not knowing what every single musical instrument in the world sounds like. People only correct to help you to identify it. ;) Nice reaction, thanks.

He signed a bad record deal in New York and then moved to Los Angeles for refuge to get away from it - in LA he played at a Piano Bar to get by writing the Piano Man and Captain Jack ultimately he got noticed there and got signed in L.A. by Columbia records whom bought him out of the bad deal and into a good deal. Basically my first album, age 10. I nearly wore it out before I could afford 52nd St and Piano Man. My favorite song of his is River of Dreams, almost a marching gospel song. Long Island, NY, baby! The pride of Hicksville, Long Island, NY. I grew up there, we knew of Billy Joel before he got nationally famous. This is one of my very favorites of his. Great stuff! 1970s Billy Joel, still great today. Listen to “New York State of Mind.” After 9/11, there was a televised benefit concert for the families of first responders who died. He sang that song during the concert. I cried my eyes out. There’s also an earlier, almost prophetic song he did in the 70s called “Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” Goosebumps.

I've watched you guys react to 3 BillyJoel songs, and it takes me back to the early 90s when I was in college and discovered the his back catalogue. Then my friends and I saw him perform in Oakland, CA. Joel is an amazing artist, and storyteller as you commented. It's wonderful to see younger people appreciate him and learn about him. He deserves all of it. His music really is a reflection of US cultural history. I now live in the UK. One of my younger work colleagues (he's a Millennial) who lectures on US history actually plays 'We Didn't Start the Fire' as part of one of his seminars and gets his students to identify all the references.

Lots of great comments. I highly recommend his early live New York State of Mind performances (I believe in England) and his live Summer Highland Falls performance in Germany. They're both amazing the Summer Highland Falls was especially interesting because a member of the audience asks him about the lyrics and he goes off and explains them and then plays the song solo live on piano. It was just brilliant.

Great reaction. It's funny, the whistling part on this song was not intended to be in the song. Billy was talking with a producer and said he needs an instrument to play this part of the song, and he whistled the tune. The producer (or maybe the writer) looked at him after and said...that's it! Use the whistling.

It is a blind purchase, and leaves us vacant as to whether you are richer or poorer for the transaction." :)..You won't find that quote online because I never posted it...
