Now for those who don't know, Billy Joel wrote this song because a young man visited him in the studio and told him that "It's crazy to be my age. But you didn't have anything going on when you were growing up. Nothing really happened." And so Mr. Joel proceeded to list the major historical world wide events that happened from the time he was born (May of 1949) until 1989, which ultimately became this song which he calls "A birthday gift" to himself because he was turning 40 the year this song was released.

It's funny because as a kid in the early 2000s, I told my dad, who was in his 60s, the opposite. I told him that all of the important, cool or groundbreaking things happened in his lifetime, before me. I guarantee you it was before 9/11 too. I didn't know anything and if the Billy Joel story is to be believed, neither did that kid.

@ambash2 Жыл бұрын
“Joel was in the studio trying to come up with song ideas for the album, when Sean Lennon stopped by with his friend, who had just turned 21 and was lamenting over how tough his generation had it. Joel, who was approaching 40, commiserated with the young men, recalling how 21 was also a tough age for him with the Vietnam War, civil rights upheavals, and other crises. But Joel was astounded when Sean's friend claimed Joel didn't have it so bad because he grew up in the '50s, and "everyone knows that nothing happened in the '50s." In response, Joel started jotting down all of the events and major figures he could remember from his generation and a song idea was born - not just for baby boomers, but for anyone struggling in this perpetually messy world. Joel told biographer Fred Schruers: "What does the song really mean? Is it an apologia for the baby boomers? No, it's not. It's just a song that says the world's a mess. It's always been a mess, it's always going to be a mess."

WWI 1914-1918 So 80 years from1909-1989 ya get two world wars. Cut 40 years 1949-1989 and leave those two out the entire thing seems much more peaceful by comparison of the two halves.

Every year he would see hundreds of different sports teams and musicians perform, but every time Billy Joel performed, they would make a point of sitting down in the stadium together, despite having access to the box with a much better view, because down there, it felt like you were with him. I'm so thankful to consider my stepdad my true father, and that his dad is also still here for me to share such special moments with both of them

I forget how the story goes but roughly someone told Billy Joel nothing important has happened in his lifetime and that it wasn’t as exciting as the other mans. Billy knew that wasn’t correct and also researched every big event that’s happened since his birth. So every major event since his birth (1949) until the release of this song (1989) was covered in this brilliant work of art. Thank you Joel.
@ambash2 Жыл бұрын
This is what prompted him writing this song: “Joel was in the studio trying to come up with song ideas for the album, when Sean Lennon stopped by with his friend, who had just turned 21 and was lamenting over how tough his generation had it.

When you pour oil and dump paper on it gets really big and hot. Hence why probably no one will see the middle eastern fire die out. Heck we've had one seen day we've just intensified it with oil and cash, it's why the US needs to leave if they want to stop righting blank checks.

Some person: it’s impossible to restate the entire century in a song Billy Joel: *”hold my fire”*

I would love to either make or see an up-to-date version of this that continues on afterwards into the 90s, the 2000s, and today. For the 90s I have thought of Barry Bonds, baseball 1994 strike, Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, USA has a surplus, that Chinese man who stood in front of those tanks in China, Desert Storm, Saddam Hussein, The Simpsons, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, Mark McGwire 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa 66 home runs in 1998, Cal Ripkin Jr 2131 consecutive games, Nintendo vs. Sega, Sony releasing the PlayStation, Mario going 3D on the N64, Mortal Kombat and Night Trap causing Congress to create the ESRB video game rating system, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, Brett Favre, John Elway retires on top, Steve Young vs. Joe Montana, Cowboys versus 49ers, Bill's lose four in a row, Cleveland Browns leave town, in come the Baltimore Ravens, new Cleveland Browns return, Kurt Kobain, Selena. There are others and obviously a lot of these would have to be worded much shorter, but I think you guys get it. As for the 2000s how about Al Gore and George Bush recount, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, family guy gets cancelled, Adult Swim, family guy gets renewed, Janet Jackson Superbowl wardrobe malfunction, Brady vs Peyton, Spygate, Heath Ledger the Joker, the ShamWow guy goes to prison, online console gaming, motion controls in video games, Sega leaves the console Market, Billy Mays OxiClean, Bernie Mac, Hurricane Katrina, Super Size Me, Fahrenheit 911, Team America World Police, Kim Jong ill, Fidel Castro death, North Korea obsessed with nukes, 9/11, earthquake in Haiti, steroids in the Olympics, China hires underage girls for gymnastics in 2008 Summer Olympics, Michael Phelps sweeps 8 gold medals, Usain Bolt breaks records and is a douche, Governator Schwarzenegger, World of Warcraft, Blackberry, iPhone, Droid does, Android, Comcast, Cingular overtaken by AT&T, Pac Bell turns into SBC, SBC overtaken by AT&T, Verizon, Star Trek Enterprise, Star Wars prequels, Hayden Christensen, Red Sox and White Sox break World Series curse, Red Sox comeback from 3 games down against archrival Yankees, economic recession, Wall Street bailout, Prius. These are obviously in no particular order and I think I've realized I put too many names of brands in there. Now as for the 2010s up until today it's going to get confusing for me. Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, Kanye West, Uber, bye-bye Steve Jobs, exploding Samsung smartphones, iPhone 6 Plus cracking in your pocket, iPhone 7 taken away headphone jack, what the fuck is a Wii U, Nintendo releases first hybrid console with Nintendo switch, Nintendo brings back Nostalgia with tiny NES classic and tiny SNES classic, 2017 having hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico and Las Vegas Massacre happening not long after and horrendous fires in Northern California not long after, even worse fires in Northern California in 2018, global warming debate going too far. Fuck I'm running out of ideas!

Someone should make a new cover of this song but reword lyrics from the 90s history till now. It would be a great cover but enlightening to see that the fires still burn.
