My daughter's 5th grade teacher used this song for their social studies section for the year. They'd break down each line. By the end of the year the kids could all sing it. She's 27 now & can still sing it. 😂

Billy Joel has been recording since the 1970s, and is still going. This is one of those where the words are SUPER important. Each stanza covers major issues in each era - from the late 1940s to the 1989, when the song came out. Each item he lists is an historical event or person. Billy Joel has a HUGE, deep catalog.

I have a degree in History and I always say if you want a quick, brief rundown of major modern history and pop culture, then listen to the lyrics of this song and Google the topics he mentions. Also, one of my History professors made this song extra credit on an exam. We had to fill in blanks from missing lyrics. As an older, nontraditional student I was the only one who got extra points and even knew that it was a song. All the other students were so confused! 😄 Learning lessons. 🤷🏼‍♀️

But, the point is that it worked. Those of us who lived through most of it, don't have to make a song to recall. Now, history is glossed over, or just not taught. What is taught is questionable. 😢😊❤

Billy Joel would have been a history teacher if he wasn't a professional musician. Back story of this song is that he was thinking about relatively recent history (from the vantage point of when this happened, late 1980s), wrote down a bunch of big events, and them some light bulbs went off. And what we ended up with was a history book of the events between the end of WWII and the late 1980s in song form. However, Billy Joel I understand rarely does this song in concert, just because it's really difficult from a lyrical and flow standpoint. Note: Search "We didn't start the fire references" on your favorite search engine, and the first result should be an article on Brittanica explaining all the historical references in the lyrics.

Great, energetic reaction. Fun to watch! Billy was a post-war baby (a boomer). In chronological order, this song lists historical people, places and events that impacted the world from the year he was born (late 1940s) through the year he wrote the song (late 1980s). When you have a chance, pull up an annotated version of the lyrics. Many people have posted them online, explaining each line of the song. It's a great, short course in some really relevant history, and outlines a changing world during that time period (the time period, BTW, also happens to coincide with the Cold War, which was in place from post-WWII through, actually, my first year of college (1990-ish, 'ish' because ending the Cold War wasn't an immediate, single event; it took about a decade to wind down, but 1990, I believe, was when the Berlin Wall was finally torn down and considered the official end of the Cold War.) Many history teachers and professors have used this song to outline whole semesters of history lessons. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it. Billy Joel has a deep and very eclectic catalog of music. He's considered among the great American songwriters of the 70s/80s and has written in a variety of styles and genres. He is also a wizard on the piano. For a good assortment to start with, I'd recommend: Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Goodnight Saigon, Keeping the Faith, Tell Her About It, Innocent Man and, of course, his first chart hit, and the song from which his nickname came, Piano Man. All the best.

@@patticrichton1135 That makes sense. That would've been my first semester, freshman year. I remember walking into my sociology class and the professor had brought in a 'giant' 26" screen TV and it was happening on the news; we spent the whole class period watching and talking about it. It was so weird and surreal, but it seemed so cool too.

I love this song! I remember, or learned about ALL the things a very young Billy Joel was singing about. I feel quite old when I lived through all these historical incidents. To be clear, either my sisters or I lived through. The nightly news showing imbedded journalists in the Vietnam War, Civil Rights bring televised, just for the right to vote...all were on right after Mr. Rogers! I kept going missing as a very young child, in search of Mr. Rogers! I never found him, but always held a special place in my heart.

This is definitely a song that isn't just great because of the beat or the chorus (although both are top notch!), but because of all of the words/pieces in it. It's a great history lesson with many of the things that didn't go so right for our country's history.
