Chevy Chase was only on SNL for the first season and left to make movies. Bill Murray replaced Chevy in season 2. When it came time for Chevy Chase to guest host, most of the cast thought he was out of control and pretty fully of himself. John Belushi got Bill Murray all pumped up to do something about it, and the rest is history. I doubt Billy Joel saw anything, although he was in fact, the musical guest.
