@7vitaman - I'm with you in celebrating "Amazing Grace". Just one little point: "Amazing Grace" had been a favorite in many churches for many generations before Judy Collins' wonderful recording. Billy Graham meetings had featured it for decades. I remember singing it often in Baptist churches, and then being happily surprised to hear Judy Collins' sweet arrangement on the radio. Newton wrote the lyric--it was set to music later with a number of different tunes--the one we sing now is great!

This is what many white people don't understand about our music, church to be exact. We take American/European music and add the soul of Africa (combined with the struggles of slavery) and create an original American masterpiece. Sing Amazing Grace in a white Church and hear the same song in the Black Church and it is almost altogether different. When you take the same song and allow two different culture's history to speak through it we create two different genres from one song.
