The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This guy actually had The Rolling Stones be his band while he sang two songs on their Tour of America’s concerts! During the middle of the show he played them each night. Now who can say that!! Plus they loved him enough to want to do it!

Don't forget he was also the only person ever co-credited with the Beatles. At the band's request, the group's 1969 single "Get Back" was credited as "The Beatles with Billy Preston".

I agree, but I believe that the talent is always out there. It is the opportunity and the support that changes. There were always complaints about the record industry, but now there is no record industry.

Yes..it serms like humanity is going backwards...people are being rewarded and recognized without having much talent ..without having worked very hard...for example..Billy Preston behind the scenes, practiced and practiced and rehearsed endless amounts of hours.. today, dj's have replaced the talented performers and musicians in many concert and event settings..and the masses find this acceptable...so kids don't have to learn an instrument...it takes a short amount of time to become a dj...and they are taking the place and making the money of the musocians...who are now out of a job...and it is ok with the masses...todays hits sound the same like if they came ftom a cookie cutter. There is a tight monopoly on what music gets promoted and recognized..by a handful of executives who run the music business. You will not get variety..so kids growing up today don't get much of a choice. Also, there is no record shop anymore...there os hardly any incentive for kids to work hard like Billy Preston did when he was a kid growing up. It is up to us to individually encourage and support our musicians in our community..we must keep the arts alive...because there is no real industry...unless we educate the kids of today in our communities, by showing them that real musicians not (dj's and rappers) but real musicians like Billy Preston existed and gave the world great music, ....we will be doomed to having a low quality type of entertainment...like many people feel that we have today..I mean..what is this thing about promoting hell while kids are getting stompped to death and then celebrating their deaths as a sacrifice??? We better get out act together ss a society..we are going backwards at an alarming speed. It is up to us in our communities to teach lids the meaning of hard work and the rewards that come from it....and to know the difference between those who work hard and those who are trying to be recognized without having earned it..to think independently and not be told to like something because the masses like something. Kids who have only been exposed to today's music are being limited to music that lacks the real creativity and musicianship of someone like Billy Preston. The industry leaders today can take the sound of someone going to the bathroom, add a beat to it, add soneone complaining with an angry attitude..throw in the sound of an ambulance, and there is your next hit..some poor kid hears it..looks around, sees other kids getting into it..hears it everywhere he or she goes and thinks.." Oh this must be good".. If we as a community tell that kid..that he or she should listen to all types of music to form a well rounded opinion...that kid may never know how great music can really be...and we should encourage kids to learn instruments instead of being dj's....djs are good and they have their place but we as a society should never be ok with having dj's replace real musicians playing real instruments. That's my opinion and I welcome yours.

Make sure that your schools, wherever you are, have good, solid music programs. And go to concerts in schools. You don’t have to be a parent to encourage young people. If you live near a college or university, you would be impressed by the quality of their music. Better music education makes better music fans too. As far as going out and making a buck in music, I think it gets harder all the time. The COVID hasn’t helped any, that’s for sure.

I think if Billy Preston had joined the Beatles as an official member, he could have saved them as a functional working band. As much as I respect Paul McCartney as a Songwriter, his ego was too big to allow Preston to officially join the group, and that may have been their undoing. On the other hand, Billy Preston may have taken over and became the 🌟 of the show. Who knows how people would have reacted to the first true Black Beatle?
