This song isn't simply about the suffering of the Cherokee. This is a poem describing the painful issue of intolerance and human displacement and humiliation. It is very applicable to our time period.

Back when Billy Ray first released this song, he made mention in several interviews that this song was written partly to honor his Cherokee ancestry (among Irish and several others), of which he is very proud. He also showed off a tipi he had erected behind his Tennessee mansion which his wife, in the interview, jokingly revealed that he spent more time in than the house. He also revealed that his Cherokee name is "Hawk Flying". He immediately seemed flustered and said that he wasn't sure it was 'allowed' to reveal your Native name to others.
@masongray56486 жыл бұрын
Though his intentions may have been good, he is not a cherokee nor is he descended from our people. Cherokees are a well documented tribes with records going back to the 1600s. Very accurate rolls where taken of Cherokee populations in the early 1900s as well from which we base our citizenship. The best genealogists among our tribe have extensively researched the ancestry of Billy ray Cyrus and his ancestors where never located in Cherokee nation until after our forced removal.

He is part Cherokee, as a long time fan of his I assure you, he speaks out for native Americans alot. I met him, he's a good man. One of his best songs. he wrote this himself. Some people should understand there is no guideline as to what a Cherokee looks like. I am half Navajo and 1/4 Cherokee. Over the years my looks have changed. this is no different. People dog on this man and don't even have one clue as to how much raw talent he has. As a writer he's prolific most of his songs he's written or co written, today it say's alot... not to mention I ain't heard him degrade women and tell them to shake it for 'em.... no offence but if you can't read the whole book before judging then don't speak.

I myself have never suffered, but makes me appreciate what I have currently, after previous treatment of native americans. Maybe other minorities should learn from the past and be glad it is not the same. Instead of using it against other for their own failures. Just sharing a message that was shared with me.
