Part of what is going on here is that the Billy Showell brush is meant for great control and details. So they don't release as much paint in a wet on wet wash, for example, so that one can really have control over the paint in a small space. I think this is why the Billy Showell brush painted 'longer' in the first test: it releases paint more slowly over time while the Escoda test string is a bit darker and more pigment was released all at once. I find the Billy showell brushes much more useful than the Escoda for the type of painting I do. In the end, it just depends on what one is painting, one's techniques and whether one is doing looser watercolor or more detailed watercolor work. Thanks for the great review!

That's very true, I do like the point on the Billy brush it's much sharper than the escoda. I still like the Billy, i probably need more practice with it. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm doing a Billy online botanical art course and her brush set was out of stock on her website and at Jackson's when I signed up, but the Escoda Versatil brushes were on special. I bought those in the corresponding sizes to the Billy set and have been very pleased with them. 😊

Hi Penholder thanks for this video, however I have stopped using Sable since the start of 2019 and now have a lovely preferable range of synthetic brushes. Best Billy Showell

I think both of the tests have the labels switched based on your video. I think we’ve had totally opposite experiences with these brushes 😆. The Billy brushes are actually much cheaper than buying the same model direct from Raphael, so that’s a cool savings.

I think the labels are correct and I just got them the wrong side in the voice over oops 🤣. I do still like the Billy brush and it is a couple of £ cheaper than a standard Raphael one on Jacksons but not as cheap as the escoda. I'll have to rewatch your video on it I remember watching a little while ago.

Penholder Art I never did video on the brush, because I only just recently got two of them, but I love them! The model Billy uses is not the standard Raphael brush, but the one with an extra long point. Escoda and I just don’t get on 😆

Heya Dan! Nice vid! I too have found out lately that I prefer more firm brushes than super soft ones. When fully loaded do you experience more accidental dripping with the Billy brushes? Off topic: first I'm really enjoying your handmade watercolors ever since I got them. Could you tell me the pigment(s) you used in sunflower yellow. I cannot find it anywhere. Thanks!

Thanks! I don't find that the Billy brush leaks, it's very good at holding water to the point you have to pick up more paint that you need. Thanks im glad you're enjoying them. Sunflower yellow is PY100.

Thank you for the review. How very differently people can find paint brushes! I think the Reserva far too soft , thin and floppy and not at all as good as Billys sable brushes. I have a Reserva nr 6 and will use it only for when I need to use the paint in a more rougher style as I do not really care for it as I do with the sable brushes from Billy, when it not usable any longer I will not replace it w another Reserva, so dissapointed am I with it. Sadly I think Billy has stopped selling her sable brushes now . I will treasure mine for as long as I can, her nr 2 sable brushes are my favourites for botanical painting!

I have grown to love the Billy Sables, yes I've heard the sad news and have now stopped using my Billy Brushes to savour them. I'm currently trying Rosemary Brushes.
