About Billy Strings:
Billy Strings plays hard and he lives hard, picking so fast and intensely that he’s known to break multiple strings per song, and basing the songs he writes on the hard lives he grew up around in the abandoned rural communities of America. His new album, Turmoil & Tinfoil, taps into a deep vein of psychedelia in Americana, referencing everything from the Dead to Sturgill Simpson, but all underlaid by Billy’s undeniable virtuosity and his knowledge of the roots of American music. He’s one of the most beloved young bluegrass guitarists today within the bluegrass community, and his front porch in East Nashville is constantly filled up with Nashville’s best roots musicians just picking up a storm.
The tricky part of making the new album, Turmoil & Tinfoil, was translating Billy Strings’ incendiary live show into the studio. Returning to his home state of Michigan, Billy enlisted acoustic roots wizard Glenn Brown (Greensky Bluegrass) as producer, and centered the music around his new band, featuring Drew Matulich on mandolin with banjo prodigy Billy Failing and much-loved Nashville bassist Brad Tucker. Rich with special guests, Turmoil & Tinfoil shows off Billy’s East Nashville community of picking friends, among them Miss Tess, Molly Tuttle, John Mailander, Shad Cobb and Peter Madcat Ruth. Of special note is a virtuosic duet between Billy and bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton on “Salty Sheep” that shows the speed, precision, and creative craftsmanship of bluegrass when it’s done right.

Lyrics:
Through the turmoil and the tinfoil
I could wait my early life
I could see you in the darkness
And I'm running through the night
I recall a silver morning
When your face had turned to gray
You were standin' right before me
But I missed you every day
Though you never said you're sorry
I forgave you even then
But I feel inconsequential
In the current state I'm in
But I'll try to keep on living
Through the nauseating gloom
And I'll try to keep on digging
Wretched past [?]
Though you never said you're sorry
I forgave you even then
But I feel inconsequential
In the current state I'm in
Through the turmoil and the tinfoil
Just the way it used to be
But I have a strength and I have learned
How to fly on broken wings
Lord, you never said you're sorry
I'll forgive you even then
But I feel inconsequential
In the current state I'm in

Billy’s GREAT…. But the fact that he found 3 guys (now 4) who love the way he plays and seems to be selfless members of a group is phenomenal. Each is extremely talented on their own, (the bass player is so damn good), but together they really do make up the absolute best musical group I’ve ever heard.

Actually, BMFF (the banjo player) sought him out... He saw him at a gig down in Nashville and thought he wanted to play with that guy as they had similar musical tastes... A mutual friend put in the word to BMFS (the guitar player) and the rest is history....

I agree but I will also say. It is insane how many extremely talented musicians out there that don't even have a band. Sometimes at festivals I see people playing around campsites that are way better than the people on stage.

I’ve played guitar for over a decade. There isn’t a genre of music, that I haven’t liked at least a couple songs from. After watching this, my world has been crushed. I’m not a musician at all, more like a hobbyist, after seeing Billy. Everyone of these guys is unbelievably talented for their ages. Congrats on inventing a new genre, Billy. Is it Blue Metal, or maybe it’s Heavy Grass?

@@krusher181 I've almost done it all, but never *smoked* heroin (I guess it's popular in some areas), nor have I seen anyone smoke it (it's normally snorted or injected), I have, however, used foil to smoke meth, and that'spretty much all I've seen itused for in person... from Northeast Ohio here.

"This song is about missing someone who is standing right in front of you. If you’ve ever had a friend who is addicted to hard drugs you might know what I’m talking about." Billy Strings Foil is often used to smoke heroin with, as you can vaporize it off the foil. It's not only just as addictive as shooting it, but it also will cause brain damage and severe lung issues due to the smoke coming off of the foil. I've seen some horrific shit in my day, but a family addicted to smoking heroin off a piece of tin foil, without a lick of furniture in their house, babies crawling around in filth, just about tops them all. Billy has seen some dark shit, despite his young age. I think that is why he is able to break through genres with his songs. They come from a real place in his heart.

Nah, Billy writes his own songs. If not he gives credit, example Jarrod Walker wrote "Everything's the Same." He explains how he lost a couple good friends to hard drugs. Also, that one of his Dad's friends (whom he knew his whole life) from the Michigan bluegrass scene got hooked on drugs and went to prison.
@robertkramer41
@robertkramer41 4 жыл бұрын
Billy writes his music, his home town was a mess and he was joining the flow when his friend overdosed. Enough to Leave is a brutally honest song about a friend overdosing and dying "enough to kill ya, enough to put you down". I lost another good friend Sunday to heroin, it's a helpless thing watching it happen, nothing you can do.
@scramblesthedeathdealer

I've never smoked heroin (I've done it almost every other way), but, at least in NE Ohio, people generally only use foil to smoke meth. Been a while, thank God!

@@robertkramer41 I'm sorry bro, I came home to find my wife's body with a loaded syringe next to her in 2017 (I'm guessing that that syringe was just a "wash" from the cotton, coroner said she had enough in her to kill 5 people, and there was more than enough left to kill me had I not called 911 before I snorted a bunch)... still messes with me to this day.
