Billy uses a lot of effects on his guitar, these days he uses DI and microphones

Obviously there are microphones on or in these instruments. I doubt any of them are using magnetic pole type pickups. Most likely piezios and microphones

Billy's guitar had a guitar cord attached to the back of it, so his guitar was "electrified". As a guitar player myself, unless you guitar is electrified, you are going to struggle when picking with a banjo, mandolin, fiddle, ect. I used to have to beat my poor ole Martin guitar to death at our Friday night jam. But they finally told me to amp up.
