There is a lot of misinformation about Billy the Kid's death. This is your comprehensive guide to cut through the noise and determine fact from fiction. Thank you to all of the historians whose research I rely upon.
On the night of July 14th, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett gunned down Billy the Kid. Or did he? Why is there still so much confusion surrounding the alleged death of William H. Bonney? Is it true that Pat Garrett’s deputies said that he killed the wrong man? Why did Sheriff Garrett bury the body without letting anyone see it? What was he trying to hide? And why was there no photograph taken? If Garrett did kill the Kid, why didn’t he receive the reward? And while we’re asking questions, who was this Billy Barlow character? What’s that all about? And who was Brushy Bill Roberts? Did Brushy have all the same scars as Billy the Kid? And wasn’t there a photo comparison study conducted by the FBI that showed Brushy and Billy were a 93% match? We will discuss all this and more as we finally clear up a few misconceptions concerning one of the greatest history hoaxes of all time! #history #western #wildwest

Closed, of course. It should never have been reopened in the first place. All this crazy speculation does is strip Billy's death of its dignity. Whether one believes he was an outlaw or a freedom fighter, he was indeed just a kid who truly believed he was on the right side of the law. Turning him into Forrest Gump does his memory a huge disservice.

I think that that was very uncharacteristic of Billy the kid. He would not be sneaking around barefoot with a butcher knife in his hand if he saw strangers particularly Anglos.. and to me this is the biggest thing that proves that Billy the kid was not the man that gunned down why in the hell would he go down there with a porch full and a room full of anglos and speaking Spanish.. I will even go further than that that was so uncharacteristic of Billy the kid that even if brushy bill was proven to not be Billy the kid I would still believe he escaped. He had a sixth sense that saved him and Pat Garrett had already gone down the wrong Man twice. Also on their deathbed it was proven that they both deputies said he shot the wrong man. Both men said he shot. A Mexican that was coming to get a slice of beef. And I think the proof of that whether people want to believe it or not is he would never go in there with a group full of angels and speak in Spanish.
@danielwebster5748
@danielwebster5748 3 ай бұрын
I love your videos but in this case you and me are going to disagree Billy the kid would never go up on the porch where they were strangers and speak in Spanish. Delvina Maxwell also said me and the coroner's jury who was all Spanish are mostly all Spanish live at the time and said it was Billy the kid because we wanted him to get away and it worked didn't it. She said the man in the room was absolutely not Billy the kid it was a half breed. She said the corner story the Spaniards talk to the over amongst themselves and said Billy has done so much to help us that now we need to help him. I don't give a damn about the 93% match. Even his own daughter said my father shot the wrong man and to keep himself from getting hung because the man was not wanted he lied and said it was Billy the kid. Where is very very few people that agree that Billy the kid was dead and a ton of them that believed he got away. I'm not talking about historians or modern-day people I'm talking about contemporaries. Both deputy said right off the bat pat you shot the wrong man. It was a Mexican and we would have never allowed him on the porch if it was Billy.finally Pat bully them and the jury in the saying it was Billy the kid. But on their deathbed they most definitely 100% without a doubt said Billy the kid was not shot that night or any other night. That Pat Garrett for the THIRD TIME. YOU KNOW HE HAD A POLICY OF SHOOT FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER IT BOGGLES MY MIND WHILE PEOPLE JUST AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPT THAT HE KILLED THE KID. I MEAN ACCORDING TO DELVINA MAXWELL THE FIRST WOMAN IN THE ROOM THAT PAT GARRETT AND THE DEPUTIES WERE TOO BUSY RUNNING AND SHE HAD TO GO IN THERE AND MAKE THE IDENTIFICATION. THE MEXICANS LATER SAID THAT PAT GARRETT IN PARTICULAR WAS SCREAMING LIKE A WOMAN. SHE CUSSED THEM FOR COWARDS WHEN THEY WOULD NOT GO IN AND SHE WENT IN HERSELF. THESE ARE THE COWARDS AND THE LIARS THAT PEOPLE BELIEVE SHOT BILLY THE KID. I MEAN JUST LOOK AT HIS BOOK ON BILLY THE KID IT'S A BOOK OF FAIRY TALES. BECAUSE OF THAT BOOK WHICH IS A BOOK PACKED WITH LIES PAT GARRETT PROVES THAT HE IS NOT TRUSTWORTHY YET EVERYONE JUST ACCEPTS THAT HE SHOT BILLY THE KID. HAD HE PUT HIM ON ICE AND WAITED FOR A CAMERA I DON'T CARE HOW FAR AWAY IT WAS HE WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY TAKEN A PICTURE BECAUSE THAT WOULD HAVE PUT HIM NOT ON ME AS A SHERIFF FOR LIFE BUT PROBABLY IN THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE. PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO LOOK AT IT LOGICALLY HE ALREADY SHOT BILLY THE KID TWICE BEFORE. I MEAN COME ON. I LOVE YOUR STORIES AND VIDEOS BUT ON THIS WE WILL NEVER AGREE. I DON'T SEE HOW ANYONE CAN BELIEVE THAT BILLY THE KID WOULD WANDER AROUND AIMLESSLY AND GET SHOT WITH ANGLOS IN THE AREA AND HE KNEW PAT GARRETT WAS IN THE AREA.

I’m a history buff from Sydney Australia. I love stories of the old west. I honestly thought this was put to bed years ago and it was established that A) Brushy Bill Roberts was full of shit, and B) Pat Garrett killed Billy The Kid. I guess every few years these stories pop up and a new generation believes these fairy tales that Billy the Kid somehow survived and lived until his 90’s. I gotta say, this is a very interesting and in depth, definitive account of Billy The Kid’s death. The best I’ve heard.

So let's assume Billy the Kid was tanning his skin to pass himself off as a Mexican. Would it not be logical to assume that he spoke Mexican as to not give away his identity. I mean if I'm going through all that trouble to make myself look like a Mexican to keep myself from being picked up by the law and I know how to speak Spanish I would think I would be speaking Spanish every chance I get even if I'm with a group of people that I trust I would think I would be wanting to speak Spanish and every opportunity that I got just to keep people from identifying me.

Great investigative work, Josh...as usual! As one that has been in the funeral profession for 38 years, I can guarantee you, as stated, Garrett would NOT have wanted to travel such a distance with a deceased body in the New Mexico Summer heat...🤢 Would have been a very unpleasant experience to say the least. Besides the bloating...a few other bodily issues would not have provided a quality photo, anyway. So...its understandable as to why the Governor didn't require such identification...and of course, the eyewitnesses made up for the unfortunate, circumstances. Keep up the fantastic historical stories...Much Appreciated!🤠

But Jo-osh. We know that Henry was loved by everyone in Fort Sumner, so why is it not feasible that the whole town, including Pat, conspired to give Henry a new life by claiming that Pat killed him? In your own words, "Just because they said it happened, doesn't mean it was so!"
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza 2 ай бұрын
Well, that assumption is a false one. What we know is that Billy was not universally loved at Fort Sumner. Area ranchers such as Manuel Brazil were actively working with Garrett, as were others. Beaver Smith and even Pete Maxwell are suspected of aiding Garrett.

Okay, @WildWestExtravaganza (Josh), in a previous video, you did say that he was loved by all the senoritas in Fort Sumner, & so I took it that he was loved by everyone. My bad. For clarity, my comment was tounge in cheek, but I am still left wondering if indeed maybe everyone, including Pat, could have conspired to fake his death, so he could start afresh somewhere else. After all, it was only 200 people. & even if some hated him, they would have been rid of him? Although like you said, he was stoopid enough to return. To be honest, I love the conspiracies that keep us guessing. 😛Anyway, vaya con dios, Cowpoke

Josh want to ask you a question you said the Poe said to Pat you shot the wrong man After some rather forceful persuasion, indeed, we induced Maxwell to procure a light. He finally brought an old-fashioned tallow candle from his mother’s room at the far end of the building. He placed the candle on the window sill from the outside. This enabled us to get a view of the inside, where we saw a man lying stretched upon his back, dead, in the middle of the room, with a six-shooter lying at this right hand and a butcher knife at his left. Upon examining the body we found it to be that of Billy the Kid. But if you back and read what Poe said before that Poe said that he never seen Billy or Maxwell before so how would Poe know if Pat really killed Billy or someone else he can only go back what Pat or Maxwell say? Josh just playing devil advocate I don't think brushy is Billy but I do think he was there with or he knew someone who was there. I think Billy lived a long life never to be heard from again and that's what I think he really wanted.
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza 3 ай бұрын
Correct, Poe and McKinney never had previously encountered the Kid. You gotta ask yourself what scenario is more probable. Scenario A) Garrett and Maxwell lied to the deputies. The dead man was not Billy the Kid but Garrett couldn’t afford to let the news spread that he had once again shot the wrong man so he silently conspired with Maxwell to trick the deputies. The other residents of Fort Sumner went along with it…all 200 of them. Their ruse was so successful that they not only convinced the deputies, but also the coroner’s jury and the entirety of the New Mexico Territorial government. Also Billy the Kid finally took the hint and never again resurfaced. Or scenario B) Deputies Poe and McKinney used their deductive reasoning, coupled with the reaction from locals and identifying information on the dead man’s body, that he was Billy the Kid.

My dad still holds to his belief that Billy survived, and tbh at his age I figure it's better to let him die thinking his hero stuck it to the man than tell him the truth. Still, I love these videos. This channel is criminally under rated.

Josh, I will say this. I do NOT believe that Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid. I DO believe that Billy was gunned down by Garrett in 1881. However… I do, wholeheartedly, wish that when Joseph McCarty met Garrett, years after Billy’s death, that Pat told Joseph: “Look, I shot the wrong man, convinced all in Fort Sumner to pass him off as your brother, met up with Billy later and told him to get his ass to old Mexico and not come back, and he’s still there, and this is where.” I WISH that would be the real reason why Joseph left amicably and later said it was concluded, and Billy lived a low key life and died surrounded by family. No lying Brushy Bill, just a former outlaw, given a second chance and taking it, living his life quietly in old Mexico, regaling his brother with stories of his adventures until old man Bonney passed quietly. A man can dream.

IF Brushy Bill had 26 wounds on his body, that makes him practically a Piker, compared to Cole Younger, who was "Truthfully" said to have more than 70 wound scars on his torso, at the time of his death, from Old Age.....Just Sayin. Now to the Controversy............... Today, in 2024, we ALL have access to information that could not have been Dreamed Of, when Garrett, Killed, or Didn't Kill, Billy The Kid.....Nobody but a Fool would argue that one Premise/Fact, right? Given that we have such unbelievable Access to Information, often that goes back Centuries and longer, is it not a bit Perplexing that "WE" are also Inundated with "Rumor, Upon Rumor, Conspiracy Theory Upon Conspiracy, Myth Upon Myth....you get the idea... With all the info at the touch of a finger/Mouse & Very Soon "Allegedly", The Blink of an eyelid(That Whole Eyelid/Eye/Tongue, You Name it, stuff is gonna "Revolutionize" the Now All But Outdated, "Butt Dialing" that we have all been guilty of). A Century+ later, we can't agree on who did and who didn't, Kill Billy, much less, "Did Billy Die when Garrett said he killed BTK?". This Means that there really was some Skullduggery involved in that whole, Death Of BTK Thingy, right???? Remember that a month or so ago a Former POTUS And Current Presidential Candidate & Party Nominee, was the victim of a Failed Assassination Attempt, that, Thank God, only cost the Target a little bit of his Right Ear, and a lot of Blood, because head wounds always bleed Effusively.....AND, there are as many Versions, of "What Really Happened" than there are Peanuts In Georgia, every September. There will Never be a Consensus without Undeniable Testimony and Rock Hard Truth, in massive amounts is Revealed......Likely, Not Even Then. You know it, I know it, Hell we all know it. That's how we Americans "Work", and I for one am thankful that we have passed the "If it's on TV or The Internet, it must be true" stage in our society. For the most part anyway. As for there being some huge(For That Time) conspiracy to cover up the Fact that Garrett Didn't Kill BTK, or some variation of that theme. I submit that all the Testimonies coming from people who knew Billy On Sight, have Put Paid to that "Rumor". Based Solely on what I have read over the last 50+ years, of "Following the new evidence" that comes out regarding Pat & Billy, I have not found One Single Bit Of Info that makes me look Kindly upon Garrett as anything but a Craven, Opportunist, Grifter, Liar, Self Promoter, Criminal(At Times), for pretty much his entire life and some of his "Less Than Legal" Antics just may be what got him Ambushed and Murdered....(My opinion is that Deacon Jim Miller was Garrett's Assassin", but Miller got his Dumb Ar$e Hung in Ada Ok. in 1908, so he can't admit or deny any of his Victims & he killed more folks than Influenza, in his day)....but no proof exists, one way or the other. Did Garrett kill Billy? Yeah, as much as I dislike almost Everything about Garrett, I believe he got Lucky Twice, that night, 1-By being in Pete Maxwell's Bedroom, when Billy Came stumbling in & 2- throwing up a shot, in the Dark Bedroom, that hit Billy in or near his Heart(But Garrett was well known for being a Crack Shot, with lots of Practice as well as Combat rounds fired by Garrett, and Muscle Memory is a real thing & may be the reason, other than Blind Luck).....Too many people who knew The Kid by sight, saw the Body and weren't Bashful in telling their Story. For Me, that settles it, but this is just an Opinion, like so many others who completely disagree. Will it ever be settled? Oh Hell No! We Americans Do So Love our Old West Heroes and Villains, and Hopefully that will always be the case......... Excellent Video, Josh

I have a thought. If Garrett had no issue pulling the trigger, to take a human life, then why would he have any worries about the grave to that life he took? Any concerns about grave robbers? Why would he bother himself to check the grave? He was paid handsomely for that body and that should have closed that chapter. Is there anything in history regarding Garrett checking out any other graves or graveyards in itself for robbers?

Well this is my thoughts on the whole Billy The Kid. I do not think Pat killed Billy Pat story have to many holes in it. I have discussed this with Josh, but as far as brushy being Billy don't know even his was Billy or he was there with Billy. I just think Billy was to smart for the things Pat said happened. For example Pat said that when Billy was coming to Maxwell house he saw the other two deputies and if Billy knew Pat and others were after him why in the hell if you see two people you never seen before there asking you questions and they are not Mexican and speaking english why would you answer them in Spanish and the most important part is why would you continue going towards them make no sense but there are a lot of more questionable things Pat said in his book that just dumb. But if we want to get to the bottom of thing why don't we just get DNA from Billy brother and compare it to brushy. One more thing what did Pat tell Billy brother when they met in that bar cause Billy brother said he was going to kill Pat on sight when he see him.

I saw a KZbin documentary done by a professional investigator who does imvestigagtions on historical matters like Billy The Kid's death. He spoke with Billy's decendants and they said Pat Garrett was one of Billy's best friends from childhood and that it was all a setup. She told him that they killed someone else in the dark and buried them instead of Billy and that he lived a very long life. People got paid off to claim that it was Billy's body in the coffin. At least that's what she told the investigator.

This is the type of misinformation that I highlight during this video. Billy the Kid has a total of zero known descendants. Anything you saw where someone was claiming to be a descendant of Billy the Kid is apocryphal at best. Please, I'm begging you, stop getting your history from KZbin channels, mine included. Pick up a book written by a legitimate and respected historian. You'd be amazed at what you might learn.

How about a break from the outlaws and lawmen let us see your lighter side? If it falls flat, you will be forgiven, after all, as you often remind us all, nobody's perfect.
